Down On The Corner
By Paul Moffett

A Bit Of Commentary: The word is that the C-J's online paywall will be up around the first of June. A little game to play between now and then is figuring out what will be available to all and what will be behind the paywall. If you haven't been paying attention, the C-J ran a couple of articles by the new publisher that were mostly corporate-speak, with few actual details, other than that the subscription price would rise significantly and that it would include online access to content behind the paywall. Apparently, there is no provision for web-only subscription.

So, a guess here is this: any interesting local content – obituaries, local news – will be behind the wall, as well any features that readers like, such as the comics and sports news. Free stuff will be national headlines and some recycled features from other Gannett writers, i.e., content available at no real additional cost to Gannett. There may be excepts from significant local news, with linked details behind the wall.

The C-J site is running on Gannett's main servers, which also handle Gannett's composition and email applications and which seem to suffer crashes and glitches more often than are announced, further degrading the experience.

All of this could be completely wrong, of course, but whatever the changes, the C-J's readership is likely to decline yet again, further hastening the decline of local news in print.

Per Noise Pollution : In Pleasant Company is a cassette compliation put together by Gordon Withers and Adam Nanaa to benefit Jason Noble, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment. The complete list of songs and pre-order information is available at http://jasonnoblebenefit.bandcamp.com/album/in-pleasant-company-a-mixtape-for-jason. Buy one even if you don't have a cassette player.
