Jazzin'
By Tim Roberts

"Knock, knock."

"Who's there?"

"Yvonne."

"Yvonne who?"

"Yvonne to dedicate most of this column to Jazz Week."

Okay, that goes down as the worst introduction to a column I've ever done (or maybe that anyone's ever done). But I'm into my third year of presenting these monthly dispatches, so indulge me a few awkward (or just downright dumb) sentences. And while we're on the subject, did you hear the one about the priest, the Mayan village chieftain and the turnip?

The Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program at the University of Louisville will bring you Jazz Week, February 21 through the 26, at the university's School of Music (with one noted exception). This weeklong celebration brings not only noted jazz stars to the campus, but also features lectures, clinics and lots of chances for on-the-spot jam sessions. Sadly, though, one legendary performer originally scheduled to appear, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, died late last year and left the series with a large hole to fill.

The Jazz Week schedule is:

Monday, February 21 – The Terence Blanchard Sextet.

Tuesday, February 22 – Gregory Hines, a Louisville Ballet Presentation at the Palace Theater

Wednesday, February 23 – The Charles McPherson Quartet's Tribute to Bird: The Music of Charlie Parker, featuring members of the Louisville Orchestra.

Thursday, February 24 – U of L's Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble II with guest artists Jack Wilkins and Rick Simerly.

Friday, February 25 – Bob Mintzer with Jazz Ensemble I and Quartet

Saturday, February 26 – Trombonist Robin Eubanks with Jazz Ensemble I and Quartet

Ticket prices for Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday's shows are $10.00 for students, $15.00 general admission. Tickets for Thursday's performance are $5.00. For Tuesday's Gregory Hines show at the Palace, ticket prices range from $15.00 to $55.00. Call the theater's box office at 583-4335 for more information.

The series offers a Monday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday package at $45.00 for general admission, $25.00 for students. Tuesday and Wednesday's shows are not part of the package.

Any questions? Call the School of Music at 852-6907.

Elsewhere in town, Spyro Gyra pays a visit to Jim Porter's Tavern on Thursday, February 17. Ticket prices are $32.50 and $26.50. The seating you get with the lower ticket price will still give you an excellent view of the band. Call Jim Porter's at 452-9531 for more information. Louisville's Java Men open.

Speaking of the JM, they certainly are quite active for a band that isn't supposed to exist anymore. Since Days of the New is in hiatus until sometime in the spring, Ray Rizzo, Craig Wagner, and Todd Hildreth make the most of the time available and play together. In addition to opening for Spyro Gyra, they will also play at Twice Told on Friday, February 25. They've also released a new CD, Orbituary. You can check out what I said about it in the "Recordings Reviews" section in this issue of LMN.

JM's Todd Hildreth still keeps busy with Etrio. Catch them at Twice Told on Wednesday, February 9 at 9:00 p.m.

"Jazzin'" columnist Tim Roberts can really tell you the one about the priest, the Mayan village chieftain and the turnip. But if you're not interested, you can still send your jazz-related dispatches to tim@troberts.win.net, or to his attention to the editorial offices of Louisville Music News.
