Celtic Corner
By Decimus Rock

Solas is Coming!

Well, not until November 17, but that's plenty of time to hustle to the Kentucky Center for the Arts for tickets. Special discount tickets are available at the Celtic Centre on Chenoweth Lane. Call Gerry Ford or just stop by, because the place is loaded with high quality Celtic merchandise. By the way, Riverdance is also returning, so stay tuned for the full ballyhoo next month.

Breeder's Cup

It’s a great weekend for the horse set from around the world when they descend on Derby City for the Other Big Race. Molly Malone's is ready for them. On Friday night, November 3, Galloglas will be there to lead the cheers and Saturday night, Drowsy Maggie will kick equine butt with their fiery sound.

Halloween Saturday, October 28

The Rudyard Kipling will have its Annual Samhain concert. Samhain (pronounced SEW-in) is the Celtic New Year and the origin of our modern holiday. There will be a costume party with prizes for best costumes and the music by Galloglas starts at 8 p.m. Call 636-1311, as reservations are recommended.

Annual Ceili

The Greater Louisville Irish Cultural Society will have its fall Ceili on Sunday, November 12. This is a great event that raises money for the annual Feis in June. Stay tuned for more details next month but mark your calendars now!

Silver Arm

Cincy power band Silver Arm has undergone some personnel changes, having added a female vocalist and an uilleann piper. A really good band has probably gotten even better. Leader Cindy Matyi has successfully met some health challenges and is back on board. Rock only hopes that they will find their way to Louisville before too long.

Looking for Celtic Music?

Sessions: Molly Malone's, every Sunday, 4 to 7 p.m. Parting Glass II (Lexington), second Wednesdays of every month. The Irish Rover (serendipitous but often outstanding) Please patronize these pubs because they are the only ones around supporting Celtic music. A new place is coming and Celtoids will be mighty pleased.
