Down On The Corner
By Paul Moffett

• Regular FPK listeners will no doubt be happy to learn that Laura Shine is back at Radio Louisville with a new show (of course) called "Acousticville." (Guess what kind of focus it has.) The debut will be on Saturday, January 8, from 3 to 4 p.m. While radio fans cannot be happy about the lack of success that Georgetown College's World Radio network flagship WRVG has experienced, but that station's loss is Louisville's gain.

Now, about Yer Girlfriend . . .

Harold Thom from the Cumberlands called to say that banjo player Dave Cosson had emergency triple bypass surgery on December 5.

Meanwhile, at Maier's Tavern in St. Matthews, there will be a benefit for Cosson on Wednesday, January 15. Scheduled to play are The Cumberlands, Art Stamper & the Flat Rock Ramblers, Kentucky Blue, the Grasshoppers plus more. Admission is$5.

• The Days of the New tour seems to have . . . ended. Kimmet & Doug are back on the bar circuit and the Java Men have already reassembled and put on two shows in December. Stories of a "disagreement" between DotN leader Travis Meeks and guitarist Craig Wagner have been making the rounds. (Wagner must not have suffered damage to his hands.).

Sales numbers on the new DotN album are reported to have passed 200,000. While not nearly as good as the platinum first album, the sales are respectable for a sophomore album. A second single, "Weapon," is scheduled for release in early 2000.

• The next "Mid City Mix" television show will be on Sunday, January 9, 2000 at the Comedy Caravan in the Mid-City Mall. The videotaping will start about 2:30p.m.and run until no later than 6 p.m. Scheduled to appear are Joel Timothy, John Gage and (tentatively) Tim Krekel, solo. All three performers have new CDs for sale, so the show should feature a good mix of familiar and new tunes. Admission is free, it's all-ages and the bar will be open.

The Kling Chamber Orchestra is seeking string players, especially violinists, but also bassists, viola and cello players. Auditions are January 3 and January 10 at 1 p.m. at The Temple on Brownsboro Road. For more information, please call the orchestra's Conductor Louis Moseson at 426-9269.

• The Louisville Youth Orchestra has announced openings for interested students for the second semester of the 1999-2000 season. All instrumentalists can apply with the exception of flutists and trumpeters. Contact Melody Welsh-Buchholz at 582-0135 for more information.

• Louisville-based First Quality Musical Supplies has added four more bluegrass groups to its list of artist endorsements, including IBMA's 19999 Vocal Group of the Year, IIIrd Tyme Out, Southern Drive, The Grasshoppers and The Chapmans. They join Gary Brewer & the Kentucky Ramblers, Michael Cleveland, Larry Efaw & The Bluegrass Mountaineers and The Larkin Family.

NQC Live, a live recording done at the 1999 National Quartet Convention at Freedom Hall, has been released by Daywind Records and Homeland Entertainment of Franklin, Tenn. The compilation features recent hits by The Cathedrals, The Hoppers, The Bishops, The Steeles, The Nelons and more, making it, in effect, a collection of hit singles. The National Quartet Convention, held in September, draws 40,000 people to Louisville from forty-plus states and nearly a dozen foreign countries and is the largest annual event for the Christian entertainment business.

The CD will be available nationally in January at Christian Bookstores.

• A last minute schedule change for you to note: Oops! The Big Apple Circus Stage Show at the KCA has rescheduled five performances to January 14 to 16, which includes two 2 p.m. matinees and three evening performances now scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Call 584-7777 for more information and tickets.

• The Music Resource Group has released the 2000 version of the Musician's Atlas, a compilation of over 15,000 music industry contacts. The Atlas has been thoroughly re-worked due to the increase of new musical outlets, labels and other opportunities. You can check it out at www.MusiciansAtlas.com.

• The Music Resource Group has also announced the creation of the First Independent Music Awards. Awards will be presented to top-ranking artists in the categories of pop, rock, jazz, country/bluegrass, folk/singer-songwriter, blues/R&B, reggae/ska, rap/hip-hop, Latin, world, electronica and new age. Judges will be celebrity artists and award-winning recordings will be nationally distributed to press, labels and key industry reps.

Artists interested in entry must submit materials by March 31, 2000. There is a$15 fee. Entry forms are available in the Musician's Atlas, at www.MusiciansAtlas.com and by calling 1-800-954-9321.
