UofL School Of Music To Sponsor African American Music Heritage Institute

The U of L School of Music is sponsoring the 4th annual African American Music Heritage Institute, scheduled for Feb. 7 & 8, on the Belknap campus. The Institute is a two-day celebration of the history and music of African Americans. It will feature concerts, clinics, lectures and workshops for students from U of L as well as Jefferson County Public Schools, and for the general public.

In keeping with the theme of the Institute, "The Spirit of the Drum," the guest artist for this year's institute is percussionist, Ndugu Chancler (In-DOO-Goo Chans-ler). Chancler has performed and recorded with jazz stars including Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Eddie Harris and Bobby Hutcherson. He has also recorded with Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie and George Duke.

Mr. Chancler is appearing through the courtesy of Yamaha Musical Instruments and the Toca Percussion Company.

On Monday, February 7, there will be an 8 p.m. concert with Chancler, the U of L Percussion Ensemble, the River City Drum Corps and the Fabulous Leopards from Martin Luther King Elementary School in the Comstock Concert Hall at the School of Music. Admission will be $5 at the door.

Tuesday's activities will feature a percussion Master class at 10 am plus a noon talk about African American music at the U of L Multicultural Center. There is no charge for either of the Tuesday events.
