Insane Clown Posse at Expo Five
Faygo. Confetti. Water cannons. Costumes. Hype men. Scenery. Booming bass. Violent lyrics… Apocalyptic lyrics… Funny lyrics… Wicked clowns.
"I-C-Fuckin' P's in tha' house."
And yes, while "Hokus Pokus" may have been one of the few songs I recognized that night, what I do easily recognize is a good time. There are few musical groups that can claim such an extreme cult following as Insane Clown Posse. Calling themselves "Juggalos" and "Juggalettes" is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the spirit and fervor of an ICP fan. Full clown face paint, ICP clothing (from head to toe) and even the décor of one's vehicle all serve as symbols of the "Clown Love" these fans share for their favorite band.
Expo Five was packed (over 1500 in attendance) on Friday, October 23 for the event. ICP was in town to promote their newest album, Bang Pow Boom, released on September 1, 2009. The group has a long history of horror-core rap, as their trail of albums date back to the early 1990's.
Before the main attraction took the stage, The Dayton Family and Hed PE opened the show. I saw the tail end of The Dayton Family, and my biggest compliment to them would be that it sounded so good from the next room that I thought it was a CD, not a live rap performance. Hed PE showed their respect to ICP in more ways than one: wearing clown makeup, chanting "Family" to the Juggalos, and throwing many plugs toward the headliner. The band (yes, band - real guitars, drums, bass, etc.) sounded excellent. I loved Hed PE back in the day, so it was a nice treat to see them live again.
ICP came on the well-decorated stage and opened the show with "In Yo Face," a cut from the new CD. Other songs of the night included "Tilt-a-Whirl," "Dead Body Man," "To Catch a Predator," "Pass Me By," "Down With the Clown," "Fuck the World" (another song I knew well), and more. Fittingly, the group closed the show with the title track of the new album, "Bang Pow Boom."
Christopher Brian Mudd (A.K.A- "Wonk"), a Juggalo for more than 12 years, had the following to say about the show. "I've been down since 1997! I think it was a great show with a great set list! Glad to see them stick to more of the old school flavor with some new added twists! It was also great to see Legs Diamond return to the stage with them to finish off the set!"
The show was brought to town by promoter Terry Harper, locally famous for his regular string of quality concerts. His upcoming events feature acts such as GWAR, The Black Dahlia Murder, Powerman 5000, The Devil Wears Prada, and a large list of locals as well - both supporting national acts and>headlining their own shows. If there is one thing this band knows how to do better than ANYONE, it is marketing. Their image is larger than life and knows no bounds. There's an ICP anything> for anyone… comic books, flasks, shirts, jerseys, shoes, wallets… I'm surprised there's not an ICP breakfast cereal. (Now, just wait 6 months…)
In summary, the concert was excellent for die-hard Juggalos and surface-level fans like me alike. Even my wife, Tonya, who accompanied me to the show (who does not follow ICP in the least), had a good time… sticky-Faygo-feet excluded! We managed to get to the front security railing towards the second half of the show for a much better view of all the wicked clowns, stage props, Faygo sprays, confetti bursts, and overall good-hearted-debauchery. It was a party, and the entire ICP "Family" was invited.
