Down On The Corner
By Paul Moffett

• This issue marks the beginning of Volume 21 of Louisville Music News, although this is actually an artifact of the normal method of dating newspapers. In reality, the March issue will complete 240 issues or twenty years of Louisville Music News.

I confess that I find it both difficult and entirely too easy to believe that 20 years have gone by since that first issue, put together with rubber cement and paper strips of copy, typed on an IBM Selectric typewriter by the fleet-fingered Jean Metcalfe, now long retired from the newspaper business. .Aas we used to say back in the day, it's been real. The Louisville music scene has both changed and remained fundamentally the same over that time, at least insofar as the abundance of performers in the area are concerned. Many of the same players are still around and still playing, of course. On the other hand, too many are no longer with us.

At the Christmas party my spouse and I hold each and to which all LMN writers are invited, Keith Clements, our blues columnist, brought a copy of that very first issue and passed it around for those interested to look at. There was some discussion about how to recognize those twenty years. I confessed that seldom had a month gone by over the last five years or so that I did not at least once wake up in the middle of the night and swear that I was through with the paper, so the notion of celebrating those twenty years seems rather foreign to me. Perhaps I should just get really drunk. In any case, I didn't have any bright ideas about what kind of special issue, if any, we should try to put out. Suggestions are invited.

In the meantime, read about Amanda Lucas and all the musicians in everybody's column and understand that even after 20 years, I don't think that we have covered everybody who should have been covered.

That's Louisville music for you.
