Down On The Corner
By Paul Moffett

• A number of changes are happening here at the world headquarters of Louisville Music News. On the personnel front, we've added another rock scene writer, Jason Ashcraft, to our roster, plus we have a Shooter Jennings review from Brandy Simpson.

On the web side of things, we have begun adding blogs to the site - Jason Ashcraft has begun one called 'Scuttlebutt.' Ashcraft is an ex-Marine, which should explain the title, but his focus will be on various aspects of the rock scene rather than any military matters. I'm urging all of my writers to join the blogosphere, which has proven to be somewhat more problematic than I had anticipated, particularly among scribblers under the age of forty. I would have expected much less resistance than I got. I will persist and eventually, I hope, the majority will be online for you to read and comment on.

• Tim Roberts hasn't been shy about blogs; he's got one up called "I've Gotta Fang,"" at which he can vent about all matters, including musical ones. His music section can be found here: http://gottafang.wordpress.com/tag/music/

The Empire Strikes Back Dept. A wide array of broadcasters and online companies, including NPR(National Public Radio) and Clear Channel Communications, have challenged a ruling from a panel of copyright judges that increased per-play fees and imposed a flat $500 yearly charge per 'channel' of music being broadcast or webcast. The ruling applies only to digital music. The businesses argue that the new fees would have a severe, negative impact on webradio, effectively shutting them down. This story is far from complete, so stay tuned.

• The entertainment complex at 4th Street Live! has replacements for the recently evicted Parrot Beach, Palm Bar and Red Cheetah bars. The new clubs are Angel's Rock Bar and Tengo Sed Cantina and are to be open by Derby Day (of course). I'm sure you're beside yourself with anxiety about the matter.

• If you missed the Bob Hill column about Marvin Maxwell's continuing efforts to air all the master recordings at Allen-Martin, you can read it at: http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070315/COLUMNISTS05/703150475.

• You might have missed the news that Brad Delp, 55,the lead singer of the 1970s and '80s rock band Boston was found dead at his home in southern New Hampshire on Friday, March 8. Subsequently, his death has been ruled a suicide.

• The 2007 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition has been given to New York Composer Sebastian Currier. The announcement was made at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where several U of L School of Music ensembles were performing a program of music from the twenty years of Grawemeyer Award winners. The award also includes a financial prize of $200,000.

• From the February Leftovers pile comes this item: "On Friday, February 16, The Mercury Ensemble of Denver, CO, Thomas Blomster, conductor, will perform the world premier of Richard Burchard's "Lament for Strings" in a concert of music to take place at Bear Creek Church, 3101 South Kipling Street in Denver. The ensemble will also perform Burchard's transcription of his 5-part choral setting of O Magnum Mysterium."

Burchard is Director of Music Technology (among other duties) at Bellarmine University.
