Down On The Corner
By Paul Moffett

• New Albany's favorite hippie-groove band, 100 Acre Wood, has undergone a bit of a change, to wit, a reduction in membership. Nate Thumas has departed to take up two new careers: as a solo performer and as a bassist in a Greek folk band. The remaining five members are confident that they can and will continue on making those grooves their audience of dancin' fools so love. To demonstrate the truth of that asertion, they are working on a new CD, due out in later August or early September and have taken up business dealings with management type person Bob Rutherford. Rutherford, as some readers might recall, got Supafuzz their Gotham Record deal. Somehow, I don't thing the Woodies are quite the band for Gotham, but then I could be wrong . . .

danny flanigan & the rain chorus are working on a CD project called Vernon's Mud & Other Favorites. The project is scheduled for a mid-summer release. They're also playing a show with Union Tree at Headliner's on June 5.

• Former Billie Holiday trumpet player Tommy Fletcher turns 93 on June 1. Fletcher is currently living on West Jefferson Street and still drives himself places.

Lonnie Brooks fans will have another opportunity to get some face time with the blues player and now author. Brooks will be signing his book, Blues For Dummies, at Hawley-Cooke Booksellers on Shelbyville Road on June 11 from 7 - 8 p.m. The book comes with a CD.

• The Louisville Youth Orchestra is holding camps for young string players with one to three years of experience. The participants will be coached by string professionals each day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Camps will be held in July and August. Contact Melody Welsh-Buchholz at 502-582-0135 for more information.

The LYO is also auditioning interested students for the 1999-2000 season. Auditions will be held August 20-22 and advance registration is required. Contact Melody Welsh-Buchholz at the number in the preceeding paragraph for info.

• Metalheads, take note. SB Communications and Sinbad Productions and BallBuster magazine have joined forces with the Global Connections Resource Network to stage the 3rd Annual Prog/Powermad Metal Festival in Baltimore, MD, August 20-22. The event is your basic showcase for metal/power bands for various industry types, so contact Sinbad at 502-995-3396 or hit the website at http://websnet.com/global for more info.

The Kentucky Opera Guild will reprise their "1999-2000 Kentucky Opera Season Preview Lunch & Listen" at Vincenzo's Restaurant on June 1-3 at 12:10 p.m. Call 584-4500 for reservations.

• A couple of musical events scheduled around Derby were cancelled due to death. Roger Troutman, of Roger Troutman and Zapp, was shot to death in his studio, apparently by his brother, who was found dead in his car a few blocks away, by an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Troutman and Zapp were scheduled to play at the Doubletree Hotel on April 29.

Across the river in New Albany, the Derby Eve concert along the riverfront was canceled after the drummer for Nazareth, Darrel A. Sweet, 51, died of a heart attack while setting up to play. Mr. Sweet is survived by his wife, Marion, his son Michael and his daughter, Maxine.

• LMN writer Tim Roberts did a voice-over narration of a video on the Kentucky Derby Festival, part of a symposium on the Kentucky Derby presented at the Smithsonian Institution on May 2 (day after Derby). It was hosted by ABC sports commentator Jim McKay.

The video was produced at Allen-Martin Productions, this year's official videographer for the KDF. Roberts is the all-purpose audio/ video / writer / multimedia wizard at Innovative Electronic Designs, Inc., Allen-Martin's sister company. Both firms were co-founded by Ray Allen and Hardy Martin.

• From down at Basix Communications in E-town comes word that the employees have been . . . busy. On the heels of KMO Country morning guy Richard Brown and wife Luann having a baby boy three months ago, two more babies have been born into the Basix Communications family. Star 101.5 host "Cale in the Afternoon" and his wife Melissa had their fourth child, Brookellen Kaye Tharp, on May 13. Also, office manager Ruth Ann Brown's daughter and son-in-law, Bob and Tricia McKenna, delivered a baby boy, Robert Lee McKenna III, on May 23.
