Down On The Corner

Jillian's is joining with Budweiser for a national "Budweiser Band Battle," Beginning in July, the battle will happen at twenty-eight Jillian's locations throughout the country. Entry is free and open to all local bands. 1.) The contest winner will win the following: designation as a Budweiser True Music Band; 2.) An all-expenses paid trip to San Francisco, including tickets to the Budweiser True Fest featuring The Dave Mathews Band concert on Sunday, September 12, 2004; 3.) Tickets to the private Budweiser Hospitality Tent prior to the concert; 4.) A $5,000 Budweiser Paul Reed Smith (PRS) Electric Guitar; 5.) Thirty second, produced radio spots and schedule for six months; 6.) A concert engagement at Jillian's San Francisco location.; 7.) A band biography on the Budweiser True Music Live website (managed by EMI of Chicago); 8) A link to the winning band's website from Budweiser True Music Live website. • The Atlantis Music Conference is set for July 21 through July 24 in Atlanta, Ga. The conference offers a variety of seminars, workshops, panels and showcases for bands throughout Atlanta. The keynote speaker will be TVT Records CEO Steve Gottlieb, who is credited with signing up Nine Inch Nails, Ja Rule and Underworld, among others.

The 2004 International Songwriting Competition is open for entries. Cash and other prizes will be shared by fifty winners in sixteen categories. All musicians, bands, artists, and songwriters are eligible to enter. Judges include: Sean "P. Diddy" Combs; Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC); Aaron Lewis (Staind); Sully Erna (Godsmack); John Ondrasik (Five for Fighting); Macy Gray, Clint Black and more. • Even though the Crusade For Children program is past, musicians continue to do various fundraisers for the Crusade. The trio Millerz and Lenz has produced a CD called Off The List , which features a real mix of songs off the band's set list, including Harold Arlen's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"; a Jim Dishman tune, "Stop The World"; an Alice Cooper tune; an Elton John song; one from Jeff Black and one from Jeff Holmes of the Floating Men. Then there is the festival put together by Bluegrass 101, called the 1st (To-Be-) Annual Bluegrass 101 Bluegrass Festival, August 28, 2004 at the Bullitt County Fairgrounds in Shepherdsville. Scheduled to perform are Bluegrass 101; David Parmley and Continental Divide; Paul Williams and Victory Trio; Stringtown; Royal Blue; Wendell Cornett and the Gumbranch Heartbreakers; Dean Osborne; and Tommy Brown and the County Line Grass Net proceeds will go to the WHAS Crusade for Children. • Here's a curious and interesting item: Musica Toscana, Inc. a Louisville educational foundation dedicated to the publication, performance, and study of Tuscan music utilizing the resources in the 18th-century Ricasoli Collection in the Anderson Music Library of the UofL School of Music, has released the first two volumes of its new series, Monuments of Tuscan Music, under the general editorship of Robert L. Weaver, retired professor emeritus from the University of Louisville and president of MTI.

The volumes have been printed by Art Print and Publishing of Louisville. The organization is embarking on a fund-raising campaign to continue the publication of the series. Auditions

The Music Department of Indiana University Southeast will hold auditions on Saturday, August 14, 2004 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center, for students wishing to major in music. Auditions for Performing Arts Scholarships in Music will also be held on this date and are open to any student planning to attend IU Southeast, regardless of major. Interested students should contact the Music Department Office at (812) 941-2655 for applications and information, or log onto www.ius.edu/music. The deadline for applications is Friday, August 6, 2004.

Codas

Frank George Cleaver, 84, died in Louisville on June 17. He was a played tenor sax with the Don Phillips Orchestra and the Bob Gilewski Big Band.

Mark Evan Hendricks, 47, died in Louisville on June 15. He was a drummer.

• From the Louisville Dulcimer Society newsletter, we learn that folk singer and traditional music stalwart Tom Jacks died on May 14 of leukemia.

Riley Davidson White III, 50, died in Louisville on June 8. He was a musician who played at Joe's Palm Room and with many Louisville bands, including Crisis, Serious Circus, Fat Cats Four, the Bobby Lanz Band, 4U and The Fanatics.
