The Celtic Corner

By Roz Carrothers

When I hear the phrase "March Madness" it's not basketball that comes to my mind - it's the fun and frenzy of St. Patrick's Day! Here are some highlights that can't be missed:

The Louisville Pipe Band

The Louisville Pipe Band will present an evening of Celtic music and dance on March 8 at the Clifton Center, 2117 Payne St., Louisville. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Louisville Pipe Band will be joined by special guests Tenrec, The Rhythm Section, the McClanahan School of Irish Dance, plus highland dancing and more. Tickets are $10 each and are available at Hawley-Cooke Booksellers (Gardiner Lane location only), or call (502) 387-5985, or visit www.louisvillepipeband.com

Galloglas

Also on March 8 is the traditional Spalding University Irish Coffee 10 a.m. to noon featuring Galloglas at 851 S. 4th St. Anyone interested can call Regina Coulter ( 585-9911) for more information.

Galloglas will be performing Saturday, March 15th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at "Old Friends & New Bookstore" for their grand opening. Located at Woodlawn Center, 291 N. Hubbards Lane in St Matthews (it's next to the Kroger Store in the shopping center). For more information call 267-7622. NB Galloglas's new St. Patrick's Day CD will be on sale during the performance and the week prior to the event.

As far as "the day" itself, you can find them on March 17 at Kitty O'Kirwan's 1 to 4 p.m. and The Irish Rover 5 to 8 p.m..

Chulrua

There will be a "Pre-St. Paddy's Day Bash!" at Jack Quinn's, Irish Ale House & Pub,112 East 4th St., Covington, KY, 859-491-6699 at 8 p.m., Thursday, March 13. Tickets are >$15 at the door. Chulrua (cool-ROO-ah) translates as red back and was the name of the favorite wolfhound of ancient Irish hero Fionn MacCumhaill. It is also the name of an internationally acclaimed trio of traditional Irish musicians, Paddy O'Brien on button accordion, Tim Britton on uilleann pipes, flute and whistle and Pat Egan on guitar and vocals. The music they play is the old instrumental dance music of Ireland: jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas, slides and more. Button accordion icon Paddy O'Brien is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant to record and annotate 500 dance tunes (a small fraction of his repertoire) and is revered by aficionados worldwide. Tim Britton is a virtuoso on the rare Uilleann (ILL-an) pipes, wooden flute and tin whistle. He is a veteran of 25 years of performing with the best Irish musicians in the States, appearing on more than two dozen recordings. For twenty years, Tipperary man Pat Egan has developed his own powerfully emotive style of guitar accompaniment and vocal delivery. All three band members have established considerable reputations on their own, so their collective mastery of Irish music and song is unparalleled, providing a concert experience of the highest caliber. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy the "pure drop" of traditional Irish music.

Lunasa

Known as the Irish "jam band," Lunasa celebrates both the lyrical beauties of traditional Irish music while highlighting the rhythm that pulls audiences from their seats. They will be at the

The Kentucky Center, in the Bomhard Theater on March 28, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $27.50 and $22.50.

Kitty O'Kirwans

Kitty continues with Sunday night concerts, all of which take place from 7 -9 p.m. Cloigheann is performing on the 2nd, Drowsy Maggie the 9th, (the 16th is discussed below) The Pail will be on the 23rd and Ten Penny Bit finishes out the month on the 30th. Don't forget to drop in for the session held every Thursday.

On the weekend of St. Patrick's - Tenrec will perform on the evening of the 15th, from 4-10 p.m. on the 16th Cloigheann and Isla will take the stage and on the 17th, music will go all day with Cloigheann, the Rashers, Drowsy Maggie, Isla, Galloglas and more!

The Irish Rover

The Rover will have its traditional tent set up for the celebration. On Saturday the 15th, the Rashers will be performing, on Sunday Ten Penny Bit will perform and on Monday, the tent will be up, with Cloigheann, the Bluegrass Irish Dancers, Galloglass and the Rashers entertaining the crowd. Also on Sunday the Rover is hosting a St. Ballrick's Celebration, people can get sponsors and sign up to have their heads shaved, with the proceeds benefiting the National Childhood Cancer Foundation - now that's supporting a charity!

So the bottom line - if you aren't at Kitty's or the Rover for St. Patrick's day (or both, for you true party goers) then you haven't celebrated St. Patrick's Day!
