Upcoming Live Music

By Paul Moffett

Acoustic / AAA

Leslie Ritter & Scott Petito

• Down from Woodstock, NY, comes the singer-songwriter duo of Leslie Ritter & Scott Petito, set to play at the Twice Told Performance Café on June 1. Their CD, Circles in Sand, arrived at the LMN office and got tossed on the changer. Bingo! My, but this young woman can sing - sing - sing, yeah! Of course, they covered "Woodstock" but didn't need to, as their own material is perfectly good. Reviews of the CD tend to be full of words like "gossamer," "heavenly," "dreamy" and the like and I can't say that I disagee with them. We presume that they'll be traveling as a duo and not a band, though the CD had lots of players on it. For more about these folks, log onto http://www.hudsonvalleyrecords.com/.

Peter Case

Peter Case has clearly decided that the Rudyard Kipling is the room for him in Louisville. He'll be back there on June 8, with Louisville buddy Joel Timothy opening. Case has been one busy fellow over the last decade, accumulating a solid catalog of CDs on Geffen and Vanguard Records in addition to touring and doing a bit of curating. His most recent project is Thank You, St. Jude, although in Louisville, most listeners will recall Flying Saucer Blues, which got good airplay on WFPK.

• The same night Case is at the Rudyard, Freedy Johnston will be at the Phoenix Hill Tavern. Johnston had a good run through the Nineties, a.k.a. the singer-songwriter era, releasing a string of well-received records, including his 1994 major label release, This Perfect World, on Electra Records, where he has managed to hang on since. He's touring in support of his 2001 release, Right Between the Promises, so put a little extra in your pocket or bag.

• Finally, the same night as Peter Case is at the Rud and Freedy Johnston is at PHT, the Kentucky Homefront radio show/concert at the Kentucky Theater on 4th St. is offering up a Special Songwriters Show, with performances by Tim Krekel, Alan Rhody, Pat Haney and Angela Kaset doing an In The Round bit. The second hour will feature songwriters Bill Ede, Victor Mechyssne and country rockers Rebels at Heart. The Kentucky Theater is located on 4th just a bit north of Broadway, past the Brown Hotel.

• Folk-punk-rocker and recovering Texan Michelle Shocked returns to Headliners on June 26. The last time she was there, the musical competition was fiece: The Neville Brothers were on the waterfront and yet, Headliners was more than comfortably full. The show was a rock-out blast, with Shocked's devoted fans planted in front of the stage for the entire night. Her band was hot, with Irish musician Fianchna O'Braonain lending a hand (and a penny whistle) to the mix. It was a blast and you can look for me there this time, too.

Bluegrass

The Bardstown Bluegrass Festival, now in it's 8th year, just keeps on improving. Held at the White Acres Campground just outside of Bardstown on June 21 & 22, this two-day festival might as well be the starting point of the festival season for bluegrass, at least right around here. Kicking off on Friday night will Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys and Dean Osborne & Eastbound headlining. Also on the bill Friday are Gary Brewer & the Kentucky Ramblers, Inquire Within and the Bluegrass Connection. The Saturday lineup includes David Parmley & Continental Divide, Melanie & Mace Belfiore, Gary Brewer and the Bluegrass Connection.

Take lawn chairs and whatever else you need to make yourself comfortable at an outdoor festival.

Ricky Skaggs

• The "Down From the Mountain" Tour is the bluegrass show of the month for Louisvillians, scheduled for June 25 at Freedom Hall. The lineup could hardly be better: Ricky Skaggs, The Del McCoury Band, Patty Loveless, Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Douglas, Alison Krauss & Union Station and the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Put all those performers in one place singing the songs from the "O Brother Where Art There" soundtrack and you have the makings of a mighty fine evening of bluegrass and oldtime music. Given that the CD has been racking up award after award - without commercial radio airplay - its clear that there is a huge audience, so you'd better get your ticket yesterday.

Blues

The James Solberg band will be at Stevie Ray's on June 3. Blues fans know that this was Luther Allison's backup band, which pretty well puts the big stamp of approval on them.

Tab Benoit makes his way into Stevie Ray's on June 17, for a Monday night blues concert. Benoit is diligent about promoting each of his recordings by playing anywhere and everywhere. For this trip, he has the just-released Wetlands CD, which has been praised as the best of Benoit showing off Louisiana's variety of blues, both swamp and New Orleans, all mixed together with some Cajun spice and funk. Think Dr. John plays Lightnin' Hopkins with some Neville Brothers tossed in and you're in the general area.

Brass Band

The Great American Brass Band Festival is an annual event in Danville Country, and it attracts the world's best brass ensembles, with a heavy emphasis on American bands. The dates this year are June 15-16 and the ensembles scheduled to appear include the Cincinnati Brass Band, The Disneyland Band, Dixie Power Trio, Olympia Brass Band, Munich Trumpet Ensemble, U. S. Marine Band Brass Quintet, the Kentucky Army National Guard Band and Danville's Advocate Brass Band, plus other. Surely, this collection of bands will play enough John Phillip Sousa marches, Civil War melodies and Bourbon Street swing tunes to satisfy any lover of brass and it's all free . For more information and directions, log on to www.gabbf.com or call the Norton Center for the Arts at 1-877-4487469.

Christian

• Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom and WJIE-FM are once again staging a big CCM show, Celebration! 2002, at the park on June 15. This year, the headliners are Jennifer Knapp and Jars of Clay, two of the hotter CCM acts currently touring. Knapp has a new CD, The Way I Am, as does Jars of Clay, recently releasing The Eleventh Hour, which debuted at #28 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, so take extra cash. The Fusion worship band will open. The concert is free with admission to the park.

Country

The Domino Kings

• Springfield, Mo. neo-traditional country band The Domino Kings will bring their brand of bar-fight-inducing honky-twang to the Rudyard Kipling on Monday, June 3. Think of this group as a bit closer to the center than Unknown Hinson but clearly unacceptable at the Grand Old Opry. Then again, they could be a Missouri-style Southern Culture on the Skids, only without the ironic viewpoint.

Andy Griggs

• Out at the track, they're doing the Ky Brew & BBQ Festival, so for $2 you can to listen to Andy Griggs and Tammy Cochran while sampling barbecue and brews from around town. I suspect that the brews and BBQ have a small extra charge, but hey, they just want you to bet the ponies anyway.

Gospel

Kirk Franklin at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom

• Gospel music lovers will be interested in the June 22 show at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, which will feature gospel star Kirk Franklin, plus The Righteous Riders, Tommy Jones and the Christian Mass Workshop Choir. Franklin has been selling at a national level since his 1993 CD, Kirk Franklin & The Family, hit the charts. He has a new CD, The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin, which is already running up the charts. In addition to the touring acts, several Louisville groups will perform throughout the day.

Jazz

• Serious jazz guitar aficionados know that Jeff Sherman's Bellarmine Jazz Guitar Clinic is the place to go to hear some seriously fine guitar playing. For this year's clinic, the guest instructors include Peter Leitch and Concord Jazz recording artist Howard Alden, both of whom have much better-than-usual backgrounds in the music industry, which you can check out at the linked sites. Sherman and the guest instructors present a concert at the end of the clinic, which concert is open to the public.

Musical

• Okay, so you think Mamma Mia! an America-Italian musical but you think wrong - it's a musical written around the music of Abba. The description of the story line is thin: a story of a young girl about to be married, and her mother confronting the past. One must suppose that there is a lot of music to fill in the spaces.

They make the movie, then they make the musical - it used to be the other way around. Anyway, the quintessential `80s dance film Footloose was morphed into a `90s musical with the same name. Lots of singing and dancing to `80s songs. It's currently at Derby Dinner until July 7, 2002

Pop

Mary Wilson

• Take your money and your memories to Caesar's on June 7 for a show featuring Mary Wilson, one of the original Supremes. Wilson has long maintained that she could have been as big a star as Diana Ross, but Motown founder Berry Gordy decided to promote Ross. If you go to hear her, you get to decide if she coulda - woulda. If you want to get the whole story, log on to her site at www.marywilson.com/

Rock

• Southern rockers Marshall Tucker will play the Portland Festival on June 1. This configuration of the band isn't too close to the 1973 model, but the members keep right on working away at the business, recording regularly and making forays into country, adult contemporary and, most recently, blues and spiritual music. No time for this event was received but they will likely be the closing act on Saturday night.

The Melvins

• All you grungeheads listen up:The Melvins will be at Headliners on June 14, bringing in their very special brand of "Black Sabbath meets Curt Cobain and they all take 'ludes." Slow and sludgy is how the critics describe it: like standing in the middle of the metal room while the walls grind ever closer. Hey, they're still out there playing and Cobain is turning to dust, so point no fingers. Bad Wizard opens.

The Bottle Rockets

• I missed the Bottle Rockets when they were last here, which has been some time. In the interim, they've been up and they've been down record-company wise, but they got picked up by Bloodshot Records and proceeded to release Songs Of Sahm, a tribute to San Antonio's Doug Sahm (Sir Douglas Quintet). Hmm. The reviewers manage to connect the dots between Festus, MO and San Antonio and swear that the Rockets fit Sahm better than you might think. Hmm. Nothing to do for it but head on over to the Phoenix on June 14 and find out. No doubt they'll play "Welfare Music" and "Radar Gun" anyway.

The North Mississippi Allstars

The North Mississippi Allstars must be building a following in Louisville - they've moved from the Phoenix to Headliners for this June 12 show. Members of this Memphis-based trio grew up in the business: two of them are the songs of legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson. (They were recording with bands like the Replacements as teenagers.) Their debut album, Shake Hands With Shorty, drew considerable comment from the critics in the national press. Go see and listen for yourself.

Amazing Rhythm Aces

• The Amazing Rhythm Aces, whose early hit "Third Rate Romance" has been cut any number of times over the years, reformed in 1994 after a fifteen-year break and hit the nostalgia circuit, while writing new songs for a new CD. They first released Ride Again, new versions of their old songs, then Chock Full of Country Goodness in 1999. They'll be in town on June 10 at Stevie Ray's, so I guess they're playing a blues-flavored country rock. Songwriter Russell Smith is also back with them and wrote or co-write most of the tunes on the new CD.

Dashboard Confessional

• Jillian's brings in Boca Raton, fly emo-rocker Dashboard Confessional, on June 2, for a show promoting the new EP, So Impossible. "Screaming Infidelities" was a solid hit for the band and established them as TRL favorites. It may be just Chris Carraba or he may be joined by Sunny Day Real Estate's Dan Hoerner.

• Rap-metal fans should circle June 23 on their calendars when the Miami-based Nonpoint grooves on into the Jillians for a show with Filter. Filter features one former member of NIN and arrived at their sound after a brief detour through industrial. Now they're industrial metal. Must be loud and grinding.

The Juliana Theory

• On June 27, Jillian's offers up a four-band show headed by The Juliana Theory, which signed with Epic/Sony in 2001 after a decade of touring and recording as a Tooth & Nail emo-core popster acts. Fans of the band may find that the act has outgrown them, leaving the bubblegum behind and moving into a hard pop sound. Also playing that night will be Celebrity, Noise Ratchet and Piebald.
