News From the Pit
By Eddy Metal

What's up freaks! How's life treating you? I'm doing rather well all around. Health, work and music! I can't wait to play out this summer and make 2018 my bitch! In TWO bands! Yeah I know, I'm an old guy (48), but I cannot even imagine not playing music anymore. Yes, it's a pain in the ol' ass-hole, packing around all that super heavy music gear, and you deal with idiots like you wouldn't believe in this business: unreliable bandmembers from time to time, drug addicts, alcoholics, dudes who let their women dictate when they jam, etc, etc. It can be a nightmare. But even with all that negative stuff you usually gotta deal with, it's still worth it to put your own music out there for the world to see. Sometimes you get lucky and find cool responsible people to jam with. Many bands do not last long for whatever reason. I have been blessed in that aspect. My longest current band Year Of The Gun has been rockin' tha Ville for 9 years now! And I hope my new band SWP lasts just as long. I've been enjoying playing some metal shows again, but it's time to sit down and write some epic songs! We've been playing out shows with only six songs! Talk about some guys ready and anxious to get out there and slay! They are like penned up sled-dogs, dying to get out in the snow! I try to tell them to chill, take your time, ease into it like making love to your woman. But nooooo. It's all about f**king like a rabbit. Fast n' forceful, with no lube for the audience. A heavy metal rabbit.

So after this Friday the 13th Show in April at Brewskees, it's time to put on my guitar thinking cap, and crank out some all new tunes which will be the accumulated experience of many bands and many years of playing out original music. I'm stoked!

Another good thing is, I get to see a lot more local talent than I have in a good while. I've discovered some great new talent recently, and rediscovered some great talent of ye olden days that are kicking ass more than ever.

Some good new bands are; Call Me Monster (a hard rock, almost metal-ish groove laden band); A Forgotten Fury (rockin' technical metal); Prey For Maria (a female fronted melodic rock band from E-Town with a deep full layered sound); Wake Up In Tsunami (a young band/super heavy groove machine with brutal vocals and addictive chunky/thick guitars); Wyld Ryde (a no-nonsense rock n' roll juggernaut of a party band) and, of cours,e we can't forget southern Kentucky's Luther, who really impressed me with their set at Trixie's. Those guys have been around since the mid-nineties! That's a crazy long time for a local band to exist. Plus, it's good to see a former bandmate do well. Luther's newest band member, bassist Marcus Goldsmith, is the perfect fit for Luther, and Luther is the perfect style for Marcus; he always did like a good singing voice. I'd have to say, that Luther is the #1 stoner groove/rock band in the region. Rock on, guys. And you can see them open up for Black Stone Cherry on May 25 at The Mercury Ballroom. I know they are stoked about finally playing there, so congrats to those guys.

Yeah, I know. I'm a naysayer. Sometimes gloomy. Sometimes too honest in my observations. But I can't help to feel optimistic about the scene as of late.

I'm here for you phuckers, so be sure to fill me in on any band news, new music, showdates, or live videos of your bands you would like people to see on Louisville Music News.

And get off your cell phone and for god's sake, get out there and support our local artists!

The Metal Grapevine

Louder Than Life 2018:

What's the rumors? Who will be playing? Hell, I dunno, and I'm in the loop with those peeps! They like keeping stuff a big secret ‘til the last minute. I can't blame them. But I'm hoping it will be pretty sweet. Less screamo- emo bullshit and more high quality music from overseas! Last year had me a bit baffled as to why horrible bands were on the mainstage during the day, but bands like Lacuna Coil and In This Moment had to play the sidestage. WTF? Those two kicked so much ass it wasn't even funny, but they were to be featured on the small stage while emo screamo doodoo was featured on the mainstage during the day? Some of those bands were generic untalented clones. C'mon LTL peeps. I love LTL, but that was just wrong. Experience and the level of music quality should play a role in timespots/stage. So let's keep our fingers crossed that we get something really good this year! I should know something in May about who is playing! I'll let you know!

Metallica Is Coming To Louisville!

But don't get your panties in an uproar, it's in 2019: Yup, it's true, March 9 at The Yum Center in 2019. My dumbass saw the announcement and without thinking thought it was this March. Shit, that's a long way off! I might be dead by then. One of the band members might be dead. Well, this should be pretty frickin' cool when it finally comes down. Knowing my luck, I'll plug the crap outta it for over a year and get the flu the night before the show in 2019. This will be a hot ticket when it happens, so you might want to secure your tickets when they finally go on sale. It's been a few years since I've seen them. Here is a bit of Louisville Rock History for ya! I saw them in 1986 at Cardinal Stadium with Ozzy. And get this - Metallica got booed horribly. Nobody knew who they were, except me. And the crowd was all worked up for Ozzy. They knew not what they did.

Black Stone Cherry Coming To Mercury Ballroom On May 25:

Kentucky boys made good, are heading back this way in May! First show ever at Mercury Ballroom, I think! And with them are their southern Kentucky neighbors Luther. Should be a great show, and sold out, so don't miss this!

Killswitch Engage And Hatebreed Coming To The Merc On May 1:

Sweet! This should be another good 'un.

Buckethead Coming To Mercury Ballroom On April 26:

See the genius guitarist in person! Right here in your hometown! This should be awesome! I might have to attend this one, even if it means being tired at work.

Mushroomhead Coming On May 6 At Trixie's:

An after-Derby bash to not miss. This will sell out, so get yer tix asap.

Slayer Farewell Tour Stops In Cinci On June 6!!!

Yes, it's true. Slayer is bidding farewell. But before they ride off into the sunset, they want to melt your faces off with one hell of a lineup at Riverbend in Cincinatti on Wednesday, June 6. I love this venue! And the peeps there always treated me like gold. I can't wait for this lineup. Testament, Anthrax,Behemoth and Slayer on one bill? Count me in!! I will be definitely be putting in to cover this one! Slayer killed at Louder Than Life a few years ago, and I'm sure they will again in 2018. Get your tickets ASAP!

Here is Slayer on The Tonight Show!

Judas Priest Guitarist Glenn Tipton Diagnosed With Parkinsons Disease, Leaves Tour:

This really bums me out. This guy is my guitar hero.He was the true brains behind JP's massive guitar tone/sound. The band will continue on without him and KK Downing, which is a mistake to me. To me, there is no JP without Glenn and KK. But I'm sure the new guitarists Andy Sneap and Ritchie Faulkner will be able to handle the guitar workload just fine, I'm just a lil' biased on my two metal guitar heroes I guess. I can't help it. I grew up listening and learning the art of metal from those two old dudes. Glenn is still able to play sometimes, so he will most likely step in from time to time to rip some badass guitar for Priests new album Firepower, and it's Tour. Glenn – thank you for all the music you have given to us metal fans. You have no idea what it means to a lot of us! We love you and wish you well the rest of your days. Do not give up! Fight man fight!

Kamelot Coming On Monday April 16 At Mercury Ballroom:

Delain and Battlebeast will be opening. I'm partial to the old singer, but it would still be interesting to see.

Soulfly/Nile Coming To Diamond Pub April 17:

Ole' Max is heading back this way, with his brother Igorr in tow! A truly bitchin' reunion. Awesome. I might hafta go see this one! Always been a Max fan. And those South Carolina Egyptians Nile will be here too! They are badass as well. Should be fun! Locals Granshaw will be opening, so be early!

Texas Hippie Coalition Returns To Trixie's On May 3:

I like this band! Great guys too.

Papa Roach Coming On April 24:

Not a big fan, but peeps do like them! Check it out!

Gonzofest Coming On April 14 At Louisville Free Public Library:

Music, Art, Literature, spoken Word, it's Gonzofest! Featuring Southern Sirens, Anemic Royalty, Jet Lawrence and much more! Starts at noon!!

Udo Coming In April!

Terry Harper, you da man! You can always count on Terry booking some obscure awesome metal that no other promoter would normally touch. The legendary Accept vocalist Udo Dirkschneider will be at Trixie's on April 3. I will definitely be at this one. Udo rocks!
