The Lonesome Pine Specials that Dick Van Kleeck and Susan Watkins have lined up for this year are truly incredible. The series, which will be videotaped from August 1 to August 12, will feature such combinations as the Louisville Mandolin Orchestra, Mando Magnificat with Bush and Ostroushko and Marshall, and the Modern Mandolin Orchestra; Masters of Percussion, which will have a section for Extended Percussion and Two Wrestlers; the 20th anniversary of Rounder Records with Grisman, Rice, Crowe, Krauss, Schatz and Lavin; ISO and the Bobs; Take 6; Nigel Kennedy and Friends (what friends!); a debut of music from "The Telluride Sessions," with Bush, Fleck, Douglas, O'Connor, and Meyer; a National Endowment for the Arts Program with tap dancer Sims, cowboy singer Ohrlin, Cajun Balfa, Hawaiian singer Sproat, blues singer Cephas, and Latin group Jarocho. I'd tell you more, but I promised only to mention the series in passing. Tickets are $6.50 -- a bargain, indeed. Shows are in the Bomhard, at 7:30 p.m.. Pam Holly, the manager of LaBo's in Lebanon Junction, arranged for the LMN crew to get on the bus with Vern Gosdin at his show the other night, along with a stream of fans...The Voice patiently posed for pictures with all comers. Thanks, Pam, and Vern, and Sue Peake, who got us tickets.

That same show drew CBS records A&R man Bob Montgomery in a second tour bus, along with some other CBS VIP's. Shoulda had some tapes to pitch... Ron Peake and Open Country got some good exposure to CBS that night, as they opened for Gosdin. Read the story elsewhere.

Didn't make it to see Tiny Lights for the second time. It seems that I was all set to go when I called and found out that the headliners wouldn't get on stage until after 1:30 a.m. Derby morning. Yipes! I was due at a Derby brunch at 11:00 a.m. and, friends, age has caught up with me...can't do that stuff no mo'. Uncle Pleasant's Mark Smalley said next time, maybe the start time would be a tad earlier...

Congrats to Tewligan's David Barhorst and wife Diane on the birth of daughter Ellie, checking in at 7 lbs, 4ounces.
