The Reel News

Falk Recording Service - engineer David Blythe reports that Frank Fritts is doing a contemporary Christian album, produced by Tim Haertel; Bob Durst is cutting a piano/tenor banjo/vocal album of standard tunes; Jack Thompson cut an album of Contemporary Christian tunes; John Pickett did two new song demos, Don Watson arranging; the Ron Hayden Trio recorded a six-song fusion jazz demo; the Coterie Singers recorded an album; Karen Metcalfe cut three new song demos, with Gayle King producing.

In the on-location recording department, the Falk crew recorded the benefit for the Standard Gravure victims, featuring Nervous Melvin and the Mistakes, the Monarchs, Kessler's Friends, the Mighty Water Kings, and No Excuse. Falk's also recorded all thirty concerts at the Kentucky Music Educators' Association convention at Louisville Gardens and the Kentucky Center for the Arts.

Studio 2002 - Rob Magallon notes that it's been a rap and R&B month for him with rapper Dunyell Flippins in doing a demo; Persuance, composed of Kevin Berry and Wan T. also laid down a tune; Kim Dunson did a rap number, with Kevin Jones of Passion handling the music end; rockers Plain Jane were in working on a four-song project; gospel singer Dave Davis came down to cut a four-song demo; finally, a three-girl group, Paypa' Doll$ cut two R&B tunes.

Real To Reel - over on Taylorsville Road, Jeff Carpenter has that he has stayed busy with a new demo by Lexington rockers Velvet Elvis; the Exploding Veils are working on a cassette of material; Insufficient Funds dropped in to record a demo; work continues on the Mrs. Frazier project, which is intended to be used for shopping to a major label.

Music Man Studios - Charlie Walls phoned up from Springfield to relate that he has been recording a flurry of songwriter demos, including LMN writers Paul Moffett and Jean Metcalfe; John Pickett cut a couple of tunes; Brenda Kuchar from Lebanon was in; L.A.S.C. Secretary Diane Black was down working on a tune; Dorothy Primm, from Knoxville had a demo done; L.A.S.C.ers Janet Rae and Marian Maxwell also worked on some material. Finally, Kenneth Young has been in working on some new tunes. Young had a hit with George Jones in the Sixties and is planning to reopen that connection if possible.

Mom's Musician's General Store - Marvin Maxwell said that Howie Gano has been working really hard on a project with Spanky Lee that is scheduled to be the first CD recorded there.

Studio 8 - a new studio has opened in Buechel, on Bardstown Road. Producer Kerry Tolley claims credits from Nashville and is offering cheap rates. Of Two Minds has taken advantage of them to cut some seventeen tunes.
