Sounds Fishy to Me

Contrary to popular belief, Big Dead Fish do not stink. At least these sure don't. They cook!!

The group came about as a result of some musicians needing something to do on summer break from the Louisville Orchestra.

Orchestra members Lisa McMillen, Nancy Henderson and Scott Staidle got together at Lisa's and, with the help of Lisa's husband Bobby, a drummer, Mike Williams on bass and Berry King on lead guitar (he will also be playing fiddle; he once played with Charlie Daniels' band), Big Dead Fish was born.

Lisa and Nancy play violin in the Orchestra, but what we heard Saturday, July 27, at Air Devils was purely great fiddlin'.

Their music is a cross between Bach and pop, said Staidle, who plays violin in the Orchestra but who plays acoustic guitar in this group. He also arranges all the songs for Big Dead Fish.

It looked a little strange seeing all the musicians setting up lighted stands for their sheet music at ADI. Their play list includes such diverse selections as Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed," the Beatles' "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Eight Days A Week"; Genesis' "Afterglow"; and "Orange Blossom Special." They also perform an interesting number that starts off with a Bach fugue and goes into "Georgia On My Mind," as well as "Summertime" Gershwin style.

The audience came to hear the blues and Pond Creek Blues Band, but on their break Big Dead Fish quickly got their attention as everyone jammed the area around the stage and cheered for more after each song. It was a real classical blast.

Will there be more Big Dead Fish?

You bet.

And who knows? Their sound may just be the next big thing to hit the airwaves.
