Down On The Corner

• Bluebird Cafe fans will be interested to know that a similar club is scheduled to open right here in Derby City. Jackie Johnson will be opening the Music Maker Cafe at 7800 Old Third Street Road in mid-February. The restaurant and bar will be a musician's showcase club, with emphasis on songwriters. They will be booking Nashville performers as well as local players.

• Way down here in the deep, dark depths of winter it's encouraging to get announcements about spring time events. Sort of like a little blast of sun through the clouds. Anyway, here's one: the 6th Annual Ohio Valley Dulcimer Gathering is set for March 13-15 at Clifty Falls State Park. The Louisville Dulcimer Society is organizing it and you can find out more by calling or writing Barry Ceridan 904 Cherokee Rd, Louisville, KY 40204, (502) 459-4323 (after 7 p.m.).

• I thought I had mentioned this but Greg Walker says I didn't, so here 'tis: Walker and Kays version of "Chattanooga Choo Choo" was chosen as the official version of that song for the 1991 Choo Choo Festival, which was the 50th anniversary of the song. Pick up your copy of the tune from Greg or Jeannette Kays or out at Falk Recording.

• Hey, kids, wanna play some music? The Louisville Youth Orchestra has openings for percussion, brass and strings for students through the age of 21. Call or write Melody Welsh, Administrative Director, 623 W. Main, Ste 400, Louisville, KY 40202, 502- 582-0135.

• Hey, mandolinists, guitarists, bassists, wanna play some music? The Louisville Mandolin Orchestra is recruiting new members. Call Mike Schroeder at 451-0045.

• Jazz lovers will be pleased to know that the Kentucky Center for the Arts will be booking more jazz, thanks to a pair of grants, one to the KCA and one to the Southern Arts Federation, given by the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund as part of the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest National Jazz Network.

The Center will receive $44,000 for its participation as a presenter in the 16-member, non-profit National Jazz Network. The grant will support jazz programming at the Center through May 1993. Included in the programming will be a Jazz Legends Program to honor a Louisville or Kentucky jazz artist annually.

The Southern Arts Federation will receive $67,500 to provide financial and technical assistance to support jazz artists and expand jazz audiences nationwide. The SAF Jazz Program will offer fee support to southeastern presenters who serve as venues for artists booked by Network members.

Other SAF Jazz Program activities will include a quarterly radio program, called JazzSouth, which will be broadcast in Kentucky on WFPL-FM, Louisville; WMMT, Whitesburg; WKMS, Murray; and WUKY, Lexington. Besides the radio show, there will be a jazz newsletter, a semi-annual Jazz Forum, a regional jazz database and other special publications and workshops for jazz performers. • The Louisville Mandolin Orchestra will perform John Goodin's "Louisville Suite" in its entirety at Saint Joseph's Church, 1406 East Washington St., on Sunday, February 9, 1992,at7 p.m. The concert will benefit the Butchertown Neighborhood Association. Donations will be accepted.

This will be the first Louisville performance of the complete work. In addition to the "Louisville Suite," the orchestra will also perform Goodin's "Shakertown."

The movements of "Louisville Suite" are "Up River Road," "Cave Hill" and "Locust Grove." Parts of the work have been performed in Europe by mandolin orchestra under the director of mandolin virtuoso Keith Harris.

• African drum specialist Shahid Shabazz James Moore will be the guest teacher at a free African drum workshop to be offered by the Louisville Youth Orchestra.

The workshop, scheduled for February 15, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., will be held in the band room at the University of Louisville School of Music, first and Brandeis.

In addition to the workshop, there will be a performance of African dances by Harlina Churn and Michelle Turner of the Imani Dance Company.
