Down On The Corner
By Paul Moffett

· The benefit held at Uncle Pleasant's for the Gospel Showcase Diner raised about $300 for the honor-system restaurant. No word yet on where the eatery will relocate. The organizers thank everybody who came and the performers who donated their time and talents.

· David La Duke, who works as hard at promoting his material as anyone in town, has yet another tune on a compilation album. The project is another Foundations Forum CD, this one called Concrete Foundations Forum 92. La Duke's track is "Love My Baby."

· Toto's drummer Jeff Porcaro died 8/5/92 as a result of allergic reaction to insecticide. Porcaro was on the Sonny & Cher TV show and played on Clapton and Steely Dan albums.

· On a recent excursion to Jim Porter's, I caught a bit of a Lexington band working on breaking into the Louisville market. The Sensations are a full-blown, nine-member group with a song list to die for. The night I saw them, they were in a Seventies & Eighties pop groove, complete with horn section. Just the thing for that large party you're planning. Mid-East Entertainment in Lexington is handling the booking.

· Speaking of excursions, that same night out, I caught a set of Tempus Fugit tunes at Dutch's Tavern up in St. Matthews. Mark Watson, saxophonist for Tempus Fugit, had been "encouraging" me to come see them for some time. Watson is a madman on the sax. The mental condition of the rest of the crew I am unable to attest to, but the music was energetic and original. I'll prolly have to check them out some mo'.

· Friends of George Chappell, aka Cowboy George, already know about his recent unfortunate encounter with a robber. For those who don't, the story is that the country musician was taking lunch to his wife, who works at a dentist's office, when he realized that a robbery was taking place. Chappell struggled with the robber and was shot in the chest. At last report, he was in stable condition at Humana Hospital-University.

· Coyote Calhoun of WAMZ has been nominated as program and air personality of the year in the Billboard Magazine awards, scheduled for next month. In addition, WAMZ is in the running for the Marconi station of the year award.

Meanwhile, WAMZ's dominance of the FM country market in Louisville is being seriously challenged by WZKS, Hot Country 103.9. WZKS, a satellite-fed station owned by Stoner Broadcasting, who also own WDJX, is getting heavily involved in local promotions. Most recently, the station sponsored the

· The Kerrville Music Festival, scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, is now the Kerrville Wine and Music Festival. Sing a few tunes, make a little wine. As usual, there is a great lineup of talent. For more information, call (512) 257-3600

· The American Bullet magazine, published by Roy Haws, is no more. No word was received on the reasons. Actually, I heard about it when I received a solicitation to subscribe to a replacement magazine.

· The New South Music Showcase is set for September 30 -- October 4 in 'Lanta. As usual, there will be a humongous batch of new music. Call (404) 875-5579 for more info.
