Down On The Corner

• For those of you who got multiple copies of LMN in the mail last month, I can only blame an amateur programmer struggling with new database software for the error. I'd fire him, but then who'd write this column?

• Labo's Ain't Closed Dept. For you Lebanon Junction country music fans, please note that Labo's is still open and doing business, according to manager Marsha Puckett. Puckett and her husband Glenn did put in the winning bid at the recent auction and they are now awaiting the completion of all the legal items before they become the official owners, but in the meantime, things are two-steppin' right along. Drop on by.

• "That's Mister God to You" Dept. Louisville Homefront's Dallas Embry called with the happy news – the season-opening Homefront show will feature Don Henry and Tim Krekel. Krekel is, of course, well known to local music fans and needs no plugs from me. Henry is a Nashville-based singer/songwriter who was brought to an LASC seminar by Alan Rhody several years ago. His first albun for CBS, Wild in the Backyard, was a splendid set of wonderfully crafted tunes about the human condition, with a wry sense of humor underlying them all.

What, you say, am I a fan? Is the Pope Catholic, etc.? Get your $5 ready and get down to the First Unitarian Church on Saturday, September ll, at 7:30 p.m.

• TANSTAAFL? — Not! Dept. Discmakers, an audio manufacturer based in Philadelphia, is offering a FREE guide to publicity for independent artists. Yup, free, as in no cost. It's not a bad little booklet, either. It's well worth READING AND FOLLOWING! Sorry, I got carried away. Call 'em at 1-800-468-9353 and ask for the "Guide to Independent Publicity." The ten per cent (a generous estimate) of musicians who might actually read and follow some of the advice in it will be amply rewarded with much better publicity. The rest of you can just keep on cryin'.

• The War Hippies have been picked up by the Miller Beer Music Network. That makes two bands from Louisville, the other being the Velcro Pygmies.

• David La Duke dropped us a line informing Down on the Corner that he has a track, "Rock & Roll Fever," on the Foundation Forum's new Disc #1. He also has a new CD scheduled for release in October.

Pluuuusss, he's got tracks on the United States Rock & Roll Anthology, Vol. 2 and the Intemational Rocker Hard Music Ball, Vol. 1."

• Coyote's has been nominated for Club/Theatre of the Year by the Country Music Association. There are only four other clubs nominated, so the multiplex downtown club is in pretty rarefied company. Anyhoo, congrats to all the folks there!

• LMN College and Underground columnist Elaine Ford has a new job to add to her résumé — Artists and Repertoire consultant for A&M records. She won't be leaving the city or, for that matter, any of her other jobs, she'll just keep those baby blues open for hot (and signable) acts. (Leave her alone, she's already heard yer band.) Anyway, we're happy, as long as she keeps on writing for us.

• Ben Daughtery of Love Jones is getting around these days. One report has the band on an European tour with the Afghan Whigs. Meanwhile, back in the LMN office, we got a photo and bio kit from a band called 9 Iron. Lo and behold, there was Daughtery, golf club draped over his shoulders, smiling out of the picture. After a couple of calls, we were still not able to find out what was what, but we'll keep you informed when we find out.

• A Good Bass Player is Hard to Find Dept. Lovesauce and soulbones' bassist Dan Kiely has been spirited away already. A British musician came to town to assemble a back-up band, complete with offers of serious signing money and a multi-album record deal. We don't have any info on the deal other than it appears to be legitimate.

• Stage Parents Attention Dept.: Actors Theatre of Louisville will hold auditions for children's roles in its adaptation of Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol. Auditions are by appointment only. Call Zan Sawyer-Dailey at 502-584-1265.

• The Louisville Mandolin Orchestra will present a free concert on Friday, September 17, at 8 p.m., in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel, Bldg. #10 on the Ursuline Campus. Need more info? Call Pat Gilmer, 502-897-1811, ext. 139.

• The Faith Channel (TKR 19) is adding Z Music to its programming mix. The music programming will run from 8 p.m. on Saturdays until 10 a.m. Sundays (at which time you should be in church, don't ya know).

• Connie Golden has been appointed Director of Music Ministry for Douglass Boulevard Christian Church, succeeding F. Anthony Thurman.

• Jonell Mosser has become a member of the New Maroons, a supergroup that includes Ringo Starr, Don Was, Benmont Tench and Mark Goldenburg. Was heard Mosser sing at the Bluebird and, as they say, the rest was history.

• No Excuse has a couple of new members. Andy Arnold has signed on to play lead and Chad Griffey is the cleanup man, handling bass/rhythm/keyboard and vocal chores. Andy and Chad were last with Pawn Jumps Queen.

• Chanteuse Susi Wood had a combination album release (for Only Our Shadows) and going-away party at the Twice Told Coffehouse on Sunday, August 15. The back room was packed and the crowd had to settle into the exterior courtyard. Susie and new husband Bill Smith are going to be away at school for a couple of years while he does postgraduate work.
