Scene Report
Let's start out this column with a few items that were late under the wire for the last one. Stone Axe Prod. brings us a tandem of cool shows on the last weekend of October at Uncle Pleasant's. Lather opens for Taang! recording artists Smog and Fiasco recording artists the Karl Hendrix Trio on Friday the 29th (21+). The Karl Hendrix Trio is also sharing the stage with Paul K and the Weathermen at this year's College Music Journal Seminar in New York City. On Saturday the 30th, a matinee all ages show featuring Erchint, Ringworm, Oval, and Dedbolt will kick off at 3pm. Ringworm has been compared to Integrity. The 21+ evening show features the psychodots.
Next, be aware that the information provided in this column is as accurate as possible up to press time, but if something changes after printing (which is quite likely in this music scene), well, I'm sorry. If this were a bi-weekly publication things would be different. The prepared scene-ster checks with the club to make sure (especially in the case of out of town pilgrimages) anyway.
REGIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS:
If one feels the urge to burn up the national freeway system, there are several things going on that are definately worth the gas. Zuzu's Petals (Twin-Tone) will be at Sudsy Malone's in Cincinnati on Thursday, Nov. 4th, which is the same night that Squeeze (A&M) is at Bogart's across the street. Sudsy Malone's admits folks 19 yrs and over and the phone number is 513/751-2300. Bogart's is, of course, all ages and tix are available through Ticketmaster (at Ear X-tacy, for example). Ed Hall and Fist Factory are at Sudsy's on the 12th, and Sub Pop's Codeine on the 16th. Back at Bogart's, the Doughboys and the Buzzcocks are on the 17th, and Concrete Blonde is on the 20th (the same night that the Laughing Hyenas are at Sudsy's.
Also, in Columbus, Scrawl headlines at Stache's on the 19th (614/263-5318). Scrawl's new release on Simple Machines records will be out any time now.
Alejandro Escovedo (ex-Rank and File, True Believers) will be at the Bluebird in Nashville (not to be confused with the one here or the one in Bloomington either) on the 3rd. For details call the venue at 615/383-1461 or 5308.
BACK HOME:
CHEZ UNCLE PLEASANT'S
Louisville missing link media darlings King Kong siege the stage on Saturday the 13th with the assisance of Sub Pop's Red Red Meat. Congratulations to King Kong on the sweet spread in October's Spin! Earlier the same day, there will be an all ages matinee wtih Evergreen, Spore (Taang!), Don Caballero (Touch & Go), and Vineland starting at around 4pm. There's a powerfully good chance that Interscope quasi-industrial artists Cop Shoot Cop will be added to either the all ages or the 21+ show on the
same Saturday, so be sure to call U.P.'s for the latest bill.
CHEZ TEWLIGANS
Thursdays this month tend to take on a tribute theme at Tewligans. Fatty, which started out being a Hog Leg tribute band, shares the bill with Chigger, an all-female Mudhoney tribute band on the 4th. On the 18th, Disaster Area is scheduled; this is the original music super ego of Battery, the Metallica tribute band.
Falling to the Louisville band curse of not putting out more than two releases on a national label before breaking up, on Sunday, Nov. 7th, Big Wheel will perform their last show ever (unless they do like Shaking Family and book 5 or 6 last shows). The show is to be all ages (i.e. early start time) and Slo-Pok is tentatively slated to open.
A new band on Chrysalis Records - Mother's Day Out - opens for Groovezilla on the 12th. The Blue Meanies from Chicago and Loppybogymy from Nashville will both play two shows on Saturday the 27th; the first an all ages matinee, the second 21+ at the usual time.
CHEZ BUTCHERTOWN PUB
The usual scheme of a bunch of free shows and one for a cover charge continues...the big $4 cover is for "the world's greatest unknown band," The Mekons, back over from England on tour to support the new Touch & Go release ("I [Heart] Mekons"). This treat is opened by labelmates Seam, and also Paul K and the Weathermen (whose new drummer used to be in a band on T&G too) and all this happens on November 23rd.
Five-Eight from Athens, GA return for their first Louisville show since Derby on the 2nd; Stick People open. Another Sub Pop band, Sunny Day Real Estate, visits on the 9th with Versus as support. Versus has toured with the likes of Yo La Tengo, Fudge, and Tsunami.
Don't miss the very heavy Godplow and Season to Risk on the 16th. Season to Risk played Tewligans w/Mule in March or so and have since signed to Columbia recs. and completed a tour w/Fudge Tunnel and the Pain Teens. Ending up the month is Grayson Hall with guests the Mocking Birds. Also keep your eyes peeled for an appearance by Memphis' The Grifters on Wednesday, Dec. 1st.
