Scene Report
By Elaine Ford

OH MY GAWD IT'S THE FLAMING LIPS AGAIN!

Does anybody who reads this column know/remember (a) Skot Halter [a.k.a. Walter Haulter or Skot the Snot] (b) when he used to work as a booking agent for Bulging Eye in San Francisco, and (c) who Bulging Eye booked? Well, Skot used to book Tewligans in the dark ages, used to book/manage the Afghan Whigs, and at Bulging Eye he used to book Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc., etc., etc. After the demise of Bulging Eye, Skot went on to road manage for groups like Poi Dog Pondering and Rein Sanction. Now he's rumored to be seen often at Cabaret Metro in Chicago.

Getting to the point, the Flaming Lips were one of those cool bands that Skot used to book too.

So enough of the local trivia, the Flaming Lips appear at Phoenix Hill Tavern for their third Louisville performance ever (as far as I can remember). One time they played at Uncle Pleasant's and totally fogged up the place with their fog machines. They also inspired quite a drunken good time in all who were there with their nihilistic yet apathetic slabs of sound. Since then, they've upgraded labels (from Restless to Warner Bros.) but still maintain residence in their native Oklahoma soil. The Lips pucker up and burn the Roof Garden on Thursday, December 16.

On the preceding Friday (a.k.a. Dec. 10), The Cactus Brothers headline the Roof Garden. The Cactus Brothers are the fraternal twin band of Walk the West, and also in-laws (labelmates) of Garth Brooks (Liberty Records). They're all sorry they had to cancel the last show, by the way.

RANT EATS DECEMBER 18

Scaling down from the October megalomania, Rant/The Literary Renaissance presents round two at a location now to be arranged (thanks, Judah) on, you guessed it, Saturday, December 18. The event was to take place at the Thunderdome but now at press time this "mystery moving theatre" is likely to pitch tents at Tewligans. Unlike the prior "rant" (which is not to be confused with a "rave"), this one will only take place at one venue, will not feature much spoken word, and will be all ages from 3 p. m. until about 10/11 p.m. (alcohol still served w/ID). The lineup includes (approximately in order): TBA, Godplow (from Birmingham), Rodan (Touch & Go), Pony (Homestead Recs.) from Brooklyn, Stepdown (risen from the ashes), and headlining will be Laughing Hyenas (Touch & Go) from Ann Arbor.

FREE STUFF

Tuesdays get back to normal and are all free in December at Butchertown Pub. On the 7th, Cherub Scourge headlines with Bloomington's Speed Luxury (whose release was produced by Antenna's John Strohm and the Zero Boys' Paul Mahern) in the opening slot. It's the return of the Lily Pons jazz groove ensemble from Lexington on the 14th; Chicago's Celtic-influenced The Drovers open. Slo-Pok appears on the 21st, fronting a show by Alias recording artists Throneberry. Keep your eyes peeled for info about Throneberry in upcoming Spin magazines. Rodan wraps things up on the 28th with guests Today Is the Day making their Louisville debut. They're signed to Amphetamine Reptile Records and are from (of all places) Nashville.

NOT FREE BUT CHEAP

Shangri-La recordin' artists from Memphis The Grifters headline Butchertown Pub on Wed., Dec. 1st; Mice Termite (ex-Prong, Flotsam and Jetsam) opens. New Year's weekend is pretty hoppin' at the Pub as well. Thursday the 29th boasts a quadruple bill of: the psychodots, lovesauce & soulbones, Strictly Wet, and TBA. Ten Foot Pole headlines the 30th. And New Year's Eve showcases Grayson Hall, Commonlaw Cabin, and Hula Hoop.
