The Louisville Chorus

"We seek to bring people of all ages together through music." The speaker is Louisville Chorus' talented and committed director Daniel Spurlock. Louisville Music News also found him a concerned and caring human person during a recent visit over lunch during which he and his gifted administrator, Theresa Davis, discussed their organization, its mission and its program.

As we write, Dan and Theresa are looking forward to both their sparkling Christmas program on Dec. 18 and their creative and equally inspiring presentation "For the Children," on March 26. The latter program is nothing less than a world premiere.

Daniel Spurlock

"Our Christmas program seeks to enhance the joy, faith and hope of a unique season. But in a similar yet unique way, so does our concert in March, coming as it does right after the beginning of spring. It is our musical tribute expressing the unique value of all children and the natural love between them and seniors." Louisville Music News will preview this heartwarming and mind-sticking event closer to the time.

Regarding the Olde World Christmas Concert, Dan explains, "We are presenting authentic carols of Germany, Russia, America, Italy and Spain, all sung in their original languages. We know that will demand more from all of us but we are one in thinking it is worth it. One way we can bring peace to our world is for people to know more about each other and what we have in common. I happen to think -- as do our people -- that music can make a unique contribution to this common purpose."

Dan is a native of Logansport, Ind., and a graduate of Juilliard School of Music. His teachers have included John Nelson, formerly conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony, and Leon Barzien, a one-time assistant to the immortal Arturo Toscanini. "I try to bring variety, quality and character to our programs. I want music that will be a good experience in both performing and listening. So I draw from all kinds of music." The Kentucky Arts Council, commenting on his efforts, says, "He has given the Chorus a new momentum and pride of organization." The Chorus has 60+ auditioned singers, including a core of professional personnel.

As a result, the Chorus subscription sales have soared 350%, audience attendance has grown 154% and corporate underwriting has increased 72%.

The Christmas program will be Dec. 18 at 3 p.m., St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1960 Bardstown Rd. It will be an unforgettable experience combining a treat for the ears and the eyes. A tasteful display of seasonal decorations from the countries whose music is being played will add to your enjoyment. DON'T MISS IT. For more information, call 895-7070. Will we see you there?
