solid, sacred R&B
Into My Life (Holy Terra)
Bobby Russ Avila
By Robert Gruber
At nineteen years of age, Bobby Ross Avila is already a music industry veteran, having worked and toured with the likes of Brownstone and Toni!Tony!Tone! A multi-instrumentalist, hailed as having "unlimited potential" by no less than mega-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Avila has chosen to use his considerable talent to glorify the Lord.
Into My Life boasts a phat, funky R&B sound, not unlike Jodeci or R. Kelly. Tracks like "Let's Get It Started" and "Sweet Music" are guaranteed to get you movin', while slow jams like "Guess Who" and "Love and Devotion" arre darn near romantic in their appreciation for the Father.
lt's on his cover of Al Green's classic, "Let's Stay Together," that Avila definitely comes into his own. Turning the hit into a gospel jam, Avila is able to retain the Green feel, updating it some with drum machine beats, bass humps and scratches. Singing it, he straddles the fine line between emotive and restrained, a trick that singers with twice his experience have been known to fluff. It's inspirational!
Avila wrote all but one of the twelve songs on In My Life, played almost every instrument, and produced the album with help from his dad, veteran producer Bobby Ross Avila, Sr. The senior Avila should be very proud of his son's talent, not to mention his love for Jesus Christ. This is an excellent debut from new star material.
