CCM Happenings

Concert Season

Old Man Winter went out kicking and screaming this year, and though it still doesn't exactly feel like it, springtime is here. In Christian music circles, that can only mean one thing: concert season. This year, the Lord is blessing our socks off, with lots of good shows coming through our area. Here is just a partial list of what you can prepare for:

April 2: DC Talk with Audio Adrenaline, at Louisville Gardens, 7:30 p.m. With both acts touring behind hot new albums, this show is sure to be the hype (and a possible sell-out). Audio Adrenaline will also be doing an acoustic set and CD signing at the Wellspring Christian bookstore the day of the show from 3:30 to 4:30. Get there early!

April 5: Dino, keyboardist extraordinaire, will be performing at Ninth & O Baptist Church on Taylor Blvd. The show starts at 7 p.m. and admission is free (a love offering will be taken). For more info call 636-5576.

April 8: Ray Boltz and David Robertson will perform at Memorial Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.50. Call 584-4911 for details.

April 12: Frontline recording artists Code of Ethics will be appearing at Northside Christian Church in New Albany. R.E.X. recording artists Villanelle open the show, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 advance, $10 day of show. Call 935-4756 for info.

April 30: Seattle's Poor Old Lu bring their funky pop/grunge sound to the Clifton Center as part of their "Buy the Land, Build the House, Feed the Kids" benefit tour, which is helping to build an outreach center for kids in Tijuana, Mexico. 5 Minute Walk recording artists Blackeyed Sceva open. The show starts at 7:31 p.m., and admission is $5. Call 893-8091 for more info.

And lest we forget, Ichthus Festival'96 is happening the weekend of April 19-20. This year's line-up boasts more alternative rock acts than previous years. Friday's acts include MXPX, The Choir, Susan Ashton & Gary Chapman, Out of Eden, Sixpence None The Richer, The Kry, The Waiting, and Phil Keaggy. Saturday will feature sets by Hoi Polloi, Poor Old Lu, Tuesday's Child, Church OF Rhythm, Blackeyed Sceva, Petra, Whiteheart and Rich Mullins. Call 606-858-3001 for ticket info, and do it today, because Ichthus has been known to sell out in the past.

Vocalist needed

Scottsburg hard rockers Sticks & Stones are holding auditions for lead singers. Persons interested must be dedicated Christians, with a heart for ministry and a strong church foundation. You must also be willing to shave your head (just kidding!). If interested, call Ace Woodson at (812) 752-7573. The band wants to record and play out extensively, so be prepared to rock hard, and soon.

Radio active

Lately, alt-rock station WXNU 105.9 FM has been giving regular airplay to songs by Jars Of Clay and Fleming & John. Praise God! Although F&J are not exactly a "Christian band," guitarist John Mark Painter has produced records for numerous Christian acts, including DC Talk and Hoi Polloi. Fleming & John recently performed a hot live set at Butchertown Pub, and will be playing Derby week with Starbilly and a number of other bands at Louisville Gardens on April 28. Jars of Clay's video for "Flood" can be seen on MTV and The Box.

If you, your band, or your church or organization have any sort of Christian music event or information you'd like to share, contact Robert Gruber at (502) 893-8091 before the 15th of each month. This service is free of charge.
