African American Music Heritage Institute Set for March 9-11

The African American Music Heritage Institute, sponsored by the University of Louisville School of Music, will be held March 9-11 on the Belknap campus of the University of Louisville and at the Chestnut St YMCA in Downtown Louisville.

A three-day celebration of the music and dance of Ghana and West Africa, the event will feature the African Drum and Dance Ensemble, Adzido, under the direction of artistic director, C.K. Ganyo, a native of Ghana, West Africa, who is currently an artist-in-residence at Arizona State University.

The Institute begins on Sunday evening, March 9, with a workshop in drum and dance technique at 6 p.m. at the Chestnut St YMCA, 1Oth & Chestnut. A reception for the performing artists will follow the workshop.

Other activities at the institute will include concerts, clinics, lectures, and workshops with members of the group for Jefferson County Public School students, University of Louisville students, and the general public.

On Monday, there will be two performances for JCPS students and their instructors, at 10 AM and Noon in the North Recital Hall of the U of L School of Music. Monday evening, there will be a public performance by Adzido in the North Recital Hall at 8: p.m. General admission tickets at the door will be $5.

Tuesday's activities will feature a 9:30 presentation to School of Music students, as well as a 2:00 p.m. lecture demonstration which is open to all U of L students. Both Tuesday events will be held in the North Recital Hall and are free.
