short blasts of indie pop
Vainglory (Hep-Cat)
Brilliantine
By Brent Starkey
By Brent Starkey
I know absolutely nothing about this band, other than that there's at least one person (named Derby) in it and he may be from Maine (at least this was recorded there). What I can tell you is Vainglory contains seventeen tunes hovering around the two-minute mark - so it never gets boring. The music is in the indie-pop vein, at times reminiscent of Pavement - at other times, kind of near the Jesus & Mary Chain. Well-sung and crafted melodies make these snippets usually seem whole when they could sound more liked unfinished song ideas. This would definitely be a good bargain-bin find if you're on the pop-tip.
