Down On The Corner
By Paul Moffett

Several sharp-eyed readers immediately noticed and called to my attention that I had put the wrong time for Louisville Music News cable show in my column, although it was correct in the ad announcing the show. Please note that the correct broadcast time is 8:30 a.m. (morning) not p.m. Sorry for the goof. Please watch anyway.

The first show in September will feature Another Colour.

Here's a teaser to remind (or inform) you about the International Bluegrass Music Association's Awards Show. Set for October 16 at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, the show will feature only the very finest bluegrass musicians in the world. In addition to the awards given out that night in various categories, dobro player Josh Graves will be inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Honor. If you're lucky, you might be able to get tickets.

E-mail certainly makes gathering gossip and tidbits easier. Smokin' blues guitarist Kelly Richey has been a devotee and user of cyberspace for some time. Her latest digital missive relates that she is working on album number four, an all-original effort except for single Hendrix tune. Watch for it.

George Egger will have a CD release party at the Train Station Restaurant in Anchorage on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. His new CD is called Out of the Blues. Copies will be available at the event. RSVP the Train Station 245-7121.

Bobby Brooks, co-owner of Louisville's own New Age Record Company, Fish N' Brook Records, also is an e-mail fan. He sent along word that Within, the label's signed second act is getting airplay in many U.S. cities and was selected for airplay on the United Kingdom's BBC Radio Network and also for radio airplay in France.

Even with e-mail, the fax machine also brings interesting tidbits. Radio producer and singer/songwriter Dan Gediman faxed the news that he will try to nail down the often-moved, frequently guest-hosted Songwriter Showcase at the Twice Told Coffeehouse. Gediman is shooting for the last Tuesday of every month for his showcases. In order to perform, you'll need a personal invite. However, not to worry if Dan doesn't think you're one of the "best of local and regional songwriters"; he's also hosting monthly open stages at two Hawley-Cooke Booksellers – the stores on Shelbyville Road and at Glenview Point, beginning September 12-13. The formula is: the second Friday of the month at Glenview Point and the second Saturday at Shelbyville Road. It's a sign-up sort of event, but the details are somewhat complex. Call Dan at 451-1514 for exact details.

All you Burt readers already know that Ground Zero Records is moving to 1048 Bardstown Road from their current location at 1765 Bardstown Road. Of course, I am led to believe that Burt readers don't read LMN (except for publisher Paul Curry), so I guess I'll just have to send this info out to those who do read this column.

(If you're confused by this, don';t worry, it's a quantum mechanical sort of thing.)

Dueling Choruses Dept. The two separate but equal Sweet Adeline Choruses in Louisville are looking for female vocalists.

The Pride of Kentucky Chorus is offering four weeks of free vocal training, beginning on Tuesday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m., at the Clifton Center, 2117 Payne Street. Call 368-7664 for more information and to pre-register.

The Derby City Chorus is also offering professional vocal training, beginning on Tuesday, September 9, at 7:30 p.m. at Thoroughbred Hall, 10609 Watterson Trail in Jeffersontown. Call 493-6684 for more information and to pre-register.

It has always seemed to me that any singer interested in singing harmonies in the band could get a solid foundation in harmony singing from the barbershoppers. Hey, the first few lessons are free!

If you are an "interested student under 21," you might still have time to set up an audition for the Louisville Youth Orchestra. Call Executive Director Melody Welsh at 502-582-0135 for information.

The 3rd Annual Reno 5-String Banjo Revival is set for September 25-28 in Hendersonville, TN. The instructional event focuses on the banjo style developed by Don Reno. This year, the event has added mandolin instruction to the list.

For more information, call 615-889-4197 or write POB 140563, Nashville, TN 37214 or e-mail: RenoRev@aol.com.

CMJ fans have already got their hotel reservations, but in New York, there's always somewhere to stay. CMJ's Music Marathon/Music Fest/FilmFest are all happening September 3-6 at Lincoln Center in NYC. Marilyn Manson will be a keynote speaker. (How can I restrain myself?) Get all the gory glory details at 516-498-3142.
