Down On The Corner
By Paul Moffett

Unconfirmed Rumors Dept. Our eager cover story writer Tim Roberts reports that Crown Electric has bit the big one. We await confirmation of this bit of unhappy news.

Silver Loop is going belly up, according to their agent Troy McElwain, The members will part company - amiably - after the end of the year. Their last show will be at the Phoenix Hill Tavern on January 1, 2000.

Hmm Dept. A recent press release from Days of the News got more than just a mention in the October 14-20 issue of the satirical publication The Onion. The magazine had an explanation about how many press releases they get, how some of them have lines that must be reprinted, etc., but the magazine insisted that the DOTN piece had to be reprinted in its entirety, which they did. They also ran a photo of DOTN main man Travis Meeks with a black bar across his eyes.

Dan Gediman Dept. Dan Gediman, he who works so hard at promoting folk/singer/songwriters, is getting married. Because his bride-to-be is allergic to cats, he's trying to get rid, er, find a good home for "a wonderful spayed tortoise shell, 8-year-old female cat." Volunteers can call Dan at 451-1514.

Next, Gediman has moved his songwriter show to Maier's St. Matthews Tavern on Tuesday nights, 7 - 9 p.m., early enough for aging baby boomers to catch a little music before bagging it prior to the 10 o'clock news. The lineup has been good so far.

Metroschifter has scheduled their fourth European tour, November 4 through December 7, 1999. They'll be touring with Trans Megetti, and many of the shows will feature Joshua.

• WFPK's afternoon drive-time host Leslie Stewart is leaving her full-time position to establish her own PR/Media Relations firm. She will continue to host her weekend jazz show, Criss-Cross, broadcast on Sundays.

Mel Bay Publications has released a new songbook from Gary Brewer, called Gary Brewer - Guitar, based on Brewer's Copper Creek recording, Guitar. The songbook features transcriptions of Brewer's fingerpicking solos and is available at www.melbay.com/oct98/97329.html

Doug Carlson, local franchise-holder for Music-Go-Round, has opened a second store at 4645 Outer Loop. The phone number is 969-6979. Music-Go-Round buys, sells and trades old and new musical instruments and gear.

• "In a Different Key," a public radio program produced by the Public Radio Partnership and the University of Louisville for WUOL-FM, has been picked up for broadcast by other prominent classical radio stations around the USA. The program will be hosted by the Louisville Orchestra's Associate Conductor Robert Franz, Marc Satterwhite of U of L and PRP's Angela Fitzpatrick and will feature music composed primarily in the last quarter of this century.

Serpent Wisdom has released a new CD, Fat Lotta Good. The project features a dozen original tunes, including a song about Mekonnen Dori, a jailed Ethiopian human rights activist. The CD can be purchased at Underground Sounds, Better Days Records, ear X-tacy and other Louisville record stores.

Moon has released his new CD, The Funeral of Mr. Disappointment. Tim Roberts reviews the project on page 24. The CD will be available for sale at the regular Louisville record stores.

Auditions

The Kentucky Opera Guild will host the Kentucky District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions on Saturday, December 4, 1999 in the Main Recital Hall at the U of L School of Music. One regional winner, representing the Tri-State Region, will advance to the National Semi-Finals at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on Sunday, February 27, 2000. From that group, ten singers will advance to the National Finals on March 5, 2000. Prizes range from $15,000 for the five National Grand Winners to $1,500 for the National Semi-Finalists.

Last year, Kentucky District winner, tenor Daniel Weeks, finished the competition as a National Finalist.
