Down On The Corner

Attention: Collectors of Left-Handed Fender Acoustic Guitars Autographed by Lots of Country Music Stars Bureau. Hope that got your attention. The Musician's Emergency Relief Fund (MERF) will benefit from the proceeds of raffling off the above-mentioned guitar. The guitar, which has been in the possession of Marvin Maxwell of MOM's Musician's General Store, is on display at MOM's. Raffle tickets cost a $5 donation to MERF. You can pick up the tickets at MOM's and ear x-Tacy Records, plus other sites to be named. The drawing for the guitar will be held on Sunday, November 13.

A Day at the Opera Dept. The Marx Brothers won't be there, but a lot of costumed opera characters and related props will be at Oxmoor Center on Saturday, October 1, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the center court. Carmen, Rigoletto, Pagliacci, props and painting demonstrations, a waltz contest, video and slide shows and craft projects for kids will tum Oxmoor into an opera-lovers' delight.

A Night in the Bookstore Bureau. Those intrepid leaders in the fine art of purveying reading material, Hawley-Cooke Booksellers, are adding a new twist to their stores. On Saturdays in October, at one or the other store, there will be live music, from 8:30 – 10230 p.m. Reid Jahn, Steve Cooley & Mike Schroeder, Renoque and Swing 39 are on the schedule. • Here's to the New Boss Division: Artswatch has a new Executive Director Andy Perry. Perry has much experience in the arts, including stints with the Louisville Orchestra, the Kentucky Opera, the Kentucky Theatre Association, Louisville Pride Committee and so on. The press release didn't say how he was at catching spears.

Here's to the New Boss Division II. John Roy has decided to step down as the President of the Musician's Union, Local ll-637. John has recently had some very serious medical problems and his recovery has not been as rapid as he would have liked. An election to fill his position was held on September 19 and Robert (Rocky) Adcock, longtime business manager'for the Union, was elected to fill out Roy's unexpired term.

Also, the Union's offices will be moved into the upstairs portion of the building. The address and phone will stay the same.

Congrats to Rocky. And good luck, 'cause you'll need it, no doubt.

They Have Toilet Seats in New York, Don't They? Section. Marvin Maxwell's 'Jammin; Johns' will be featured on the NBC Today show on Saturday, October 8, as part of a gadget feature.

It Was Twenty Years Ago Today. Well, close enough. The Derby Dinner Playhouse is celebrating their twentieth anniversary this month. As far as l'm concemed, anybody who can figure out a way to entertain the public with real, live performersand stay in the business and make money gets a big tip of the old beret. Way to go, team.

Coming in at No. #1 Bureau. Steven Curtis Chapman's latest album, Heaven in the Real World, debuted at number one on Billboard's Contemporary Christian album sales chart, with the title tune hitting number one on five charts. The accompanying video has been added to the playlists of both MOR Music TV and the Americana TV Network. Chapman is featured in the fall issue of Wal-Mart's Headliner magazine as well.

Again? Dept. Coyote Calhoun has been selected as Program/Operations Director of the Year for 1994 and Local Air Personality of the Year for 1994 from Billboard and Airplay Monitor. For those of you keeping track, that's the 7th award for Air Personality of the Year and 5th Award for Programl Operations Director of the Year. Congratulations, Coyote.

Todd Lowe is the new Prez of the Louisville Jazz Society, as of September 8. I guess enough Jazz Society members showed up after all.

Global Networking in Nashville Section. If you are a woman in the music business who would like to do a little bit of that old 'networking' (Men schmooze, women network?), then trot down to Nashville on November 18-20 for the Women in Music, Business Associati0n's (WMBA) Global Conference. Three days of meetin' and greetin' and gettin' instructed in da music biz, complete with workshops and seminars and showcases and all that kind of thing. Bill's Brother Releases a Record Division. Roger Clinton, brother of a certain well-known politician, will make his recording debut on Pyramid Records, with an album entitled Nothing Comes Easy.

Rollin' and Tumblin' Across the Country Division. Scott Mullins, owner of Rollin' and Tumblin' Records, has secured national distribution for his blues label. Great going, Scott.

Key Changes

• Nashville recording engineer Lynn Peterzell passed away on September 8, of a heart attack suffered while recording a session. Peterzell, age 39, had recorded twenty-three number one songs since January of 1993. Peterzell and his wife, Mary Beth, were married at Highlands Baptist Church and had an apartment in Louisville. Peterzell and Marvin Maxwell of MOM's had been discussing Peterzell's possible involvement with MOM's Recording Studio. Maxwell and his wife, Beverly, as well as sons Max and Mark attended the funeral.

Bob Lange, one of the original Monarchs, passed away on Monday, September 26, at the age of 51. Lange had been ill since being diagnosed with melanoma on July 16. Lange's last performance with the Monarchs was during the Jeffersonville Steamboat Days last month.
