A Unusual Double Header: Comedy and Opera!

Mark this date down: Thursday, January 22. On that date, the second program in the Kentucky Center for the Arts Series "Thursday Sessions" will. feature the "classical show stopper" B. J. Ward. Ward is both a commedienne and diva and has drawn raves from some of New York's most demanding critics.

Preceeding her recital/comic routine at 7 p.m., you can have a chance to "Dunk-a-Diva" for only $1, with the proceeds to benefit the Louisville Aids Walk. For another buck, you. will be in luck for you can bell, pick B.J.'s program. The money will also go to the Aids Walk. Come and see why she is called "The Victor Borge of Opera."

B. J. once said of her singing opera, "I'm. not an expert; I just act like one."

Just call 502 584 7777 if you want to have an entertaining evening, you just might be glad you did!

Previews of the "Magic Flute"

Kentucky Opera's season-opening production is now being carefully prepared. Some 120 members of the Opera's Guild have already "lunched and listened" to a preview of what promises to be a stunning and charming presentation. Just before the holiday rush, they were introduced to Mozart's classic portrayal of the conflict between good and evil, better known as "The Magic Flute."

The introduction included an enlightening talk by Stage Director "Buck" Ross, who is making his Kentucky Opera debut. Ross is highly personable and well informed and the fact that he is widely known as "Buck" suggests that there is a wider audience for opera.

Ross brought four of the principals with him and it was a delight to hear their beautiful voices. In particular, the presentations of Craig Priebe as the bird-catcher, Papageno and Darla Partridge Orr his wife-to-be, Papagena, was breathtaking. Steven Paul Spears was delightful as Tamino. Rivaling his poised and talented performance was Adrienne Danrich as his sweetheart, Pamina.

This will give you an idea of something of the treat that will be in store for the persons taking in the three "Lunch and Listen" sessions that start off 1998. These events are frequently sell-outs, so make your reservations early, as they are the best bargain in luncheons anywhere.

The Magic Flute" will be presented at the Macauley Theatre on Saturday, February 7; Tuesday, February 10 and Friday, February 13, all starting at 8 p.m. On Sunday, February 15, there will be a matinee at 2 p.m. All performances will be sung in English.

Call the Kentucky Opera at 584 4500 for more information.

See you there!
