Jazzin'
By Tim Roberts

Lots to cover this month, so pay close attention. There may or may not be a quiz afterward, depending on how well I feel you have absorbed this material, so stay focused and ask good questions. If you must chew gum, please do so quietly. You, sit up straight and take off your hat in my class.

Former educators are still useful when they leave the classroom, unless they end up as staff writers (jazz columnists, specifically) for local music newspapers. The Louisville Jazz Society (LJS) now has one as its new president. Kathy Hopper, former principal of Waggner High School, was elected to the position, which has been vacant since previous LJS president Todd Lowe resigned late last year because of his demanding full-time job. Kathy has been an LJS member for about 15 years. According to her statement in the May/June 1998 LJS Newsletter, she wants the organization to "continue to be a driving force for jazz in the Louisville area."

Kathy is also a former English, journalism and humanities teacher with the Jefferson County Public Schools and co-author of a handbook to guide schools through the evaluation and accreditation process of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. She was also named a Thompson Fellow by Brown University.

More Music Education – The 1998 edition of Jamey Aebersold's Summer Jazz Workshop will be Sunday, July 5 through Friday, July 10 at the University of Louisville School of Music on the Belknap Campus. As always, noted jazz performers and instructors from all over the nation, including many of Louisville's own, will be part of the workshop faculty. You can catch the faculty concerts Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights at 7:30 in the main recital hall of the music school building. Those shows are free and open to the public.

On Wednesday night, July 8, there will be a special faculty concert at Masterson's Food and Drink. In addition to the performance portions of the clinic, this year's program includes a lecture from special guest Kenny Wener, author of Effortless Mastery.

Check out http://www.jajzz.com/sjw.htm for more information on the clinic, or call Aebersold Jazz at 812-945-3142.

Jazz in Central Park - Ken Clay of the Kentucky Center for the Arts has announced dates and lineup for this year's Jazz in Central Park. It will be on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23, at the C. Douglas Raney Amphitheater in Central Park. Admission is free for both days.

The music gets underway at 5:00 p.m. each afternoon. Saturday's lineup has the Jamey Aebersold Quartet, Boogie Morton and Friends, Culture Shock – which consists of local artists Dick Sisto and Hugh Peterson, joined by Booker T. Wilson from New York, and Cincinnati's Steve Schmidt and Bob Bodley - and the Sonny Fortune Quartet, featuring pianist John Hicks.

Sunday's show counts off with Bobby J. and the Flying Martinis, followed by the Ron Jones Quartet, then Atlanta's Kamal Abdul Alim and Super Blue. The festival ends with the Jack Mcduff Quintet.

Other Shows in the Region – The Elkhart Jazz Festival crams in dozens of acts on eight stages in three long days. This year's festival runs June 26 through June 28, Friday night through Sunday. Jazz/blues vocalist Joe Williams will headline the festival's shows Friday night at 7:30 and Saturday night around 9:15. Other featured guests will be Eddie Higgins and Meredith D'Ambrosio, David "Fathead" Newman, Bucky Pizzarelli, Joan Collaso, Tim Cunningham and Red Holloway.

Ticket prices range from $120.00 for all four sessions (including a jazz cruise) to $60.00 and lower, depending on how much you want to see. For more information and ticket prices, call the Elkhart Centre at 1-800-597-7627.
