East Los Angeles is noted for its heavy Hispanic population and the bands that arise from there; the Clifton Cultural Center's September 24 show will feature one such band, Las Cafeteras, as well as Louisville's Appalatin, for an evening for really cross-country music. Las Cafeteras is tagged as a Chicano band, fusing folk music, spoken word, Jarocho (Veracruz Mexican Son), Afro-Mexican and zapateado (footwork). Their music also has strong political themes, both with respect to various immigrant issues as well as feminist stances. They're touring in suppost of their 2012 release, It's Time.
Appalatin is, of course, well-known in the Louisville area for their mix of Latin and Appalachian music and will likely draw a good crowd, to the benefit of Las Cafeteras. Tickets are a mere $10.
