I've known Bobby Jack personally-and-professionally for more than 30 years. Like him, I poured everything into my radio work for a quarter of a century.....then got canned by a corporation (as did three of my co-workers -- after the head of the company said that the four of us had done a great job).
This is a prime example of what's wrong in the radio industry today......"corporate" radio.
If President Obama wants to do something "constructive", for a change, clean house with the FCC and put someone in place who understands and cares about "serving in the public interest", instead of those who care only about raising money for their bank accounts. Then break up the "corporate" ownerships, giving the control of local electronic media back to the communities, where it belongs.
Rather than turning off your "local" radio-or-television station try something that may have the best affect. "First" realize that corporations couldn't care less what the public thinks or wants. "Secondly", understand that your congressional leaders either don't understand, don't care, or have always supported these corporations....so you could drop off the face of the earth and they couldn't care less. "Finally", the only thing corporations understand is the "bottom" line. Get out and get the advertisers to drop their commericals. Once the money stops...they'll either listen or they'll get out (which would be the best). This should work in all the markets, whether they be small, medium, or large. As stated, corporations care only about the "bottom" line, but their greed keeps them from understanding that it's what is done "above the bottom line", by people like Bobby Jack, that makes the bottom line what it is. Anyone who cares enough about making this change should try it....you won't be any worse off....and you just might make a difference. Wouldn't it be wonderful to hear and see radio and tv being operated by truly local ownership again? If you're lucky enough to have that type of operation at this time....do everything you can to keep it. Remember....corporations care only about themselves....regardless of what they tell you.
Let's hope Bobby Jack, and others like him,can find a "smart" company that will pick them up. Those companies will give the competition all they can handle, and then some.

The "contract negotiations" a previoius post referred to amounted to BJ being told the morning of his last day, "We aren't renewing your contract. This is your last day." End of story. Maybe when WAMZ's morning ratings plumit will they realize what a mistake they made for the sake of saving money. Want to save money? Get rid of Coyote. He's a drain on the station and a drag to listent to. Here's one out of town listener that just tuned in for the last time. Sorry WAMZ. Your contract is not being renewed.

Bobby Jack...God Bless. You'll land on your feet somewhere. I'm pulling for you.

This isn't exactly a surprise. Music Bloggers are generally more savvy and produce content as it is available. Additionally, bloggers are now getting the same press releases that these sorts of magazines held dear to their hearts for so many years, they're getting tons of free albums in the mail to review, most don't mind reviewing leaked albums under the auspice of advanced copies (even where advanced copies aren't out yet) and so the information is available faster. Even Pitchfork reviews seem dated by the time they come out. In this Internet age, consumers have no patience to wait for a magazine that is going to have smaller blurbs, fewer pictures and costs money (that the artists don't see). Not to mention passive reading is giong by the wayside...if we like an article or it is a band we're interested in, we want to click the hyperlink to their myspace page, watch a linked youtube video, read hyperlinked concert review, or read their wikipedia entry for a little more background on the band. Steve Jobs said people don't read anymore, and while he missed the mark with that statement, a little editing of it to provide "people don't PASSIVELY read anymore" might have been a bit more appropriate.

As a blogger and an IP guy...I welcome the evolution...

Preference of one over another doesn't mean you don't *like* the other

From what I've seen is that the email was from January & in February they said they were #2. The presumption then is that they were number one only briefly as the result of a spike from iTunes gift cards given at Christmas. Seems a premature call, if true, which is why Apple hasn't claimed themselves to be #1.

Other artists have done this also. Trent Reznor leaked Survivalism from Year Zero using a flash drive in a men's restroom in Spain. Also, Not Here to Please You by Internet sensation's Hadouken!, Icky Thump by White Stripes and Good Life by Kanye West were all released on flash drives. Kylie Minogue released her new album "X" in November or December using a flash drive. The Mars Volta release, although announced some time ago, is just one more in a series. There's will be pretty cool though by the continuing release every month on the 29th.
