Louisville Orchestra’s Annual Martin Luther King Concert, Kentucky Opera, KCA Accessibility

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Like his musical compadre J. L. Puckett at the Courier-Journal, Andrew Adler has to pull double and triple duty many weekends, reviewing concerts plus writing a regular column and the occasional feature piece. This week, he has a review of the Louisville Orchestra’s Martin Luther King Concert

Adler also previewed the Kentucky Opera’s upcoming season as well as a feature on the accessibility of the Kentucky Center. The price of keeping the Gannett Company’s profit center running is a steep one.

Andrew Adler Critiques Websites

The C-J’s Arts maven, Andrew Adler, takes a look at the websites of the Louisville Orchestra, Louisville Ballet, Kentucky Opera and Actors Theatre and finds them wanting. But then, these are mainstream, old line arts groups, dedicated to presenting performances that could have appeared in anytime over the last century or so. Why would they be up-to-date on the web?

Post-St. Pat’s Day

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

I hope everyone got through their Irish fling yesterday and didn’t acquire anything more problematic than a green beer hangover. The Celtic musicians are no doubt sleeping in today, as they have been cramming most of a year’s worth of playing into just a couple of days. That’s because there aren’t too many gigs for Celtic players in Louisville these days.

For U of L fans, today is also a sad day; the Cardinal basketball team lost to Texas A&M yesterday in the NCAA Tournament, so now Louisville fans will have to root for the Kentucky Wildcats, a favor unlikely to be returned by Wildcat fans. Oh, well, wait ’til next year.

On the deadtree front, LMN’s Jazz columnist, Martin Z. Kasdan, Jr., goes off base to contribute a preview (to the C-J) of tonight’s Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra show at the Kentucky Center.

Walking all over Marty’s usual New Orleans territory, Andrew Adler reveals that he has major NOLA connections, with an in-law business that his wife now runs. Along the way, he discusses the problems that the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Orleans Opera face in the post-Katrina reality that is New Orleans, particularly with respect to simply finding a place to perform. Adler notes that he will likely be reminded of this the next time he complains about the sound quality of the Kentucky Center.
