Ye olde LEO’s Mat Herron has a long piece on John Timmons and the ear X-tacy problem. David Mann has a longish preview of Andrea Davidson’s show at the Vernon Club on Saturday.
Herron also has the cover story about mountaintop removal plus Daniel Martin Moore and Ben Sollee’s new CD, Dear Companion, available at, ahem, [...]
The short answer to “What’s up with ear X-tacy?” is that owner John Timmons has two more months at his current location before he has to do something: move, close or renegotiate the current lease, which, he said, is too much for him to pay. The problems he’s facing are the familiar ones: the economy [...]
Forecastle Fest has grown so large so fast that we all fear it’ll just float away someday to a larger city with deeper pockets. In the interim, however, if you are a “regional musician,” you may now apply for one of ten slots reserved for the locals at the Festival. Here’s the info from the [...]
The Fader.com website reports that Will Oldham will release on bluegrass CD on Drag City Records, mostly likely with The Picket Line, his occasional backup bluegrass band. No definite date as yet.

With the corporate clout available from Churchill Downs, this should be a festival that will work and be well-run. Beginning December 4, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. EST, tickets go on sale at www.hullabaloufest.com. [...]
The C-J’s Southern Indiana writer Dale Moss wrote a very nice piece on Ivan Guernsey, brother of fiddler Jeff Guernsey and builder of resonator guitars.
In addition to his luthier work, Ivan plays the resonator and was in the excellent bluegrass band Storefront Congregation.
Here’s a show for the bluegrassers – the Del McCoury Band will be doing an in-store at ear X-tacy on Wednesday, October 28 at 6 p.m. It’s free, of course. The group has a new CD, Family Circle, to promote.
We learn from the Drowned in Sound website that Will Oldham will release Funtime Comedown on November 17 through Drag City Records. This disc features the Picket Line, described as “the official dance band of Funtown, a metaphysical little community in the woods outside Louisville.” Might be a bluegrass-ish record.
In case you missed it, The International Bluegrass Music Association’s 20th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards, to be hosted by Grammy®-winning country artist Kathy Mattea and the legendary bluegrass band Hot Rize, will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2009, at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. The list of nominees is here.
LMN Bluegrass columnist and WFPK radio host Berk Bryant got a very nice write-up in the Courier-Journal today. The writer didn’t mention Berk’s LMN column, however. Tsk, tsk.
