Apple’s iTunes is now the number one seller of music, surpassing Wal-Mart, according to Kings of A&R. Then again, it might be a ‘bump’ related to Christmas gift cards, as suggested by Cory Greenwell of Backseat Sandbar.

From what I’ve seen is that the email was from January & in February they said they were #2. The presumption then is that they were number one only briefly as the result of a spike from iTunes gift cards given at Christmas. Seems a premature call, if true, which is why Apple hasn’t claimed themselves to be #1.
Could be either case, I suppose. I’ll update whenever there’s additional news or an update. It’s also only a matter of time…
