The Fight We Want To See: Ticketmaster vs. Live Nation

Live Nation Finds “Great Options” In Ticketing Business

Live Nation, the company formerly known as Clear Channel Entertainment, is seeking a way into the ticketing market, which would bring it into direct competition with Ticketmaster. Live Nation operates venues all over the country, including the Louisville Palace, and stages as many as 10,000 live events every year; having a position in the ticketing business would allow it to make more money (of course). Ticketmaster’s Barry Diller pooh-poohed the notion, saying that the ticketing business is hard to get into. In any case, it can’t possibly harm the ticket-buying public to have a little competition over who gets to sell those tickets and collect the many ‘extra’ charges that so improve the bottom line. At least, that’s what it says in Capitalism 101. Variety.com has the whole story.
