The July issue of Louisville Music News is out on the streets of Louisville and Southern Indiana, with the talented Teneia Sanders holding down the cover. There are features on Black Stone Cherry and Larry Coryell, plus a review of the Rowdy Frynds tour, as well as several reviews of Louisville music and all the regular columnists. If you can’t get a copy in hand, the web edition will be available on Sunday, July 1.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is being countersued by Tanya Andersen, a former defendant whose infringement case was dismissed with prejudice, meaning she is eligible for attorney’s fees in the case. Anderson alleges that the RIAA engaged in a number of illegal action in pursuit of their claim that she had downloaded a number of RIAA-members’ copyrighted material. If you go in search of your favorite online webcaster tomorrow, don’t be surprised if you find only a dead feed: tomorrow is the “Day Of Silence” protest against the increase in royalties that many webcasters say will put them out of business. WFPK and WFPL will join the protest, silencing their streams from 9 p.m. until 5 p.m. on June 26.
The recently announced contract for independent artists from Clear Channel Communications continues to generate heat and negative comments. The Future of Music Coalition has issued a press release decrying the company’s move as “counter to spirit of the payola settlement.”
Of course, the other view of the matter is that all this hoo-rah is happening just when terrestrial radio is losing its power over the average viewer and corporate labels are fading fast, suggesting that in a short while, there may be no real need to force terrestrial radio to play indie product, as there might be little else available.
Production Simple is bringing Ryan Adams and the Cardinals into the Lyons Brown Theatre on July 11, not quite two months after a less-than-stellar show during the NON-Comm Convention in May. Tickets will go on sale on June 30 at 10 p.m.
The same message announced the appearance of Patty Griffin at the Brown on August 15, with tickets on sale July 7 at 10 p.m.
The Louisville-based country rock band High Noon is sufficiently excited about playing a showcase that they sent around a poster advertising same. They’ll be at 12th & Porter (the club name) on July 9 at 6 p.m. (It almost reads like a Abbott & Costello routine - High Noon, 12th & Porter, 7/9, 6 p.m.) Best of luck - you’ll need it.
